Does the TR7 have more accesories than other TR's

Postby john » 03 Feb 2009 07:43

Is it due to the era or the shape that has meant that the TR7 has had so many kits and conversion specialists.

Both I think John.

The reason why you keep a TR3A original is to capture by-gone times and drive as slice of history. Perhaps its because the 7/8 was so ahead of its time that owners tend to go the other way and just add minor facelifts to keep it modern and fresh looking.

The general car admiring public are always surprised to learn how old my Grinnall is and certainly of you park it next to say an Allegro or Marina of the time then its looks impossible that they were from the same era!

I have to confess that the standard 7 either in FHC or DHC form never really excited me, I looked at buying one purely becuase it was going to be my first car to get me classic experience before getting what I really wanted - a TR6, when I could afford to buy and insure one. It was also a cheapish car to buy and run for a Uni student as I was at the time.

Blastphemy I know.

But then I stumbled across the Grinnalls, first my 2 litre (tuned to 135BHP) and then the V8 (again bored and tuned to 250 BHP) and to be honest now I cant see me ever bothering with a 6, I fear it could be something of a dissapointment now....

Compared to modern cars there were very few optional extras on a TR7. I suppose alloy wheels were one option for the later cars, and automatic transmission would have been another, but were there any other options?

I think other options were, radio/cass.player, tow bar, striping second doormiror but indeed very little options.

Now we can maken electic windows en remote doorlocks and so on.
But i prefere just as it came, all those things can fail.

Fog lights, different (TR8 style) steering wheels, mud flaps.

But look at what it had over the previous TRs. Secure interior, much more roomer, integrated warning circuits with dash lights, negative ground system, heater, roll-up windows and a large glove box and console storage.

Yes airco! Was it an option alone for the US marked?
Have not seen an EU car with airco.

My car has airco but the pump is missing.[xx(]

Get yourself a modern AC compressor and resurrect the system with R134a...

John,

I reckon it's down to the shape and the immense performance potential for a bargain price if you go down the V8 route.[:D]

More smiles per mile.[:0]

I hate to say this but I think it may be because the Wedge is somewhat down the TR food chain. At least over here. As Wayne mentioned, the TR3 guys wouldn't dream of customizing the body. With the TR7, I think the attitude is that it isn't that much of a traditional, valuable classic. Add in the bad press it got about the styling that still gets dredged up occassionaly. So I can see why many would feel nothing lost by altering the bodywork. Personally, I like the looks of mine stock. I could lose the big rubber blocks on the rear though.[;)]
