Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Hard starting could be cold start injector but also could be air getting in after the air mass meter through a leak in any of the hoses. If you haven't replaced any of the hoses they may be suspect. Time is not rubbers friend. Same applies to the large intake hose. I didn't have any problems with my large hoses but I wrapped them with black duct tape (on a 45 degree angle) and wound small braided white string to make them look like new.

You don't need zinc in the oil with our modern over head cam design and it's steel cam. That's for the older push rod engines with flat tappets rather than roller followers. They lessened the zinc over the years to increase the life of the catalytic converters. There's some argument about how much the zinc shortens the life. Other than that zinc is a good thing. I'd rather have a bottle (actually I used half a bottle) of STP in the oil. Only costs a couple bucks per oil change.

That is the sort of story we like to hear Bruce. You've given the thing a new lease on life, with out a spanner used. Thanks for the update.

Well done, & enjoy the 8.

Hi Spyder, I still like a bit od zinc with my oil.

In the late 60s we were being supplied by Shell with their best racing oil for the Formula 1 Brabham Repco.

It was of course an overhead cam engine. Shell supplied the oil, accompanied with a jar of liquid zinc. This, like proprietary additives, was to be added to the engine after it was warm.

Yes oil technology then was nothing like we have today, but if it was good enough for Shell to want us to add it to their best oil, I do like having some in there, & you know about my love affair with STP.

Zinc isn't a bad thing, only if you have to pay $2,000 to $3,000 on a new catalytic converter like in a BMW etc. Not so critical if you only have a couple hundred dollar after market one (or if you just punch out the insides). Racing machines don't have catalytic converters so racing oils have high levels of zinc. Regular oils have diminished to low levels. Some manufacturers will publish the amount, some won't reveal what or if they have any. The club was buying Kendal Racing oil by the case for members through a local supplier for their older push rod engines. The Jag (Just Another Grand) owners didn't need it as well as the TR7 and Dolomite owners.
