TR7 Charcoal Emissions Cannisters TKC1331 RKC4350

Well, I have begun my TR7 conversion and I think I have made a discovery. I am working from the back to the front, and have come across a bit of a mystery with the fuel lines and pump wiring (at least to me).

My FI TR7 has a fuel line that runs out of the tank to the FI stuff. It also has a return line in to the tank. There is also a return line from somewhere that runs to a small beige colored canister behind an access panel just below the filler neck.

The carbed TR8 has a fuel line out to the carb. It ALSO has the return line from somewhere that runs to the same canister by the filler neck. It has an edelbrock manifold and holley carb that someone has installed in the past.

Is this canister deal an FI thing? Does it sound like the 8 was FI originally and someone carbed it? Just curious.

It's a North American thing. The cannister is a fuel separator. The line goes from the tank to the separator cannister to a hard line that goes to the front of the car where it is connected to the charcoal cannister where the fumes get sucked into the intake mahifold and burned when the engine is running. As the Gas cap is sealed it gives a small vaccuum to the gas tank. It is on my FI Spider and my Yellow TCT ('79) carbed TR7. I'm sure the TR8's had it as well as they have the same emissions to meet.

Most injection systems have three lines (even now). One is for the fuel feed, the other the fuel return. The third is for the usually carbon canister to catch 'vapour'. It even shows it as part of the US emissions sh** on the carb versions within the workshop TR8 manual.

You can do without it, you will have to vent to atmosphere it should not have any detrimental effect.

I have not traced the line forward yet to see exactly where it goes but will when I get home, I was just wondering. By the way, I have been working on this now for a couple weeks and am having a blast. I am by no means a great mechanic, but really want to learn, and have already increased my TR knowledge 1000x. This is really a great way to understand the in's and out's of how these cars work

This is what I got on Photobucket. It's hard to get everything in (the plumbing) as there is always something in the way. A video would solve these problems but don't have one.
