Fuel filler cap.

Postby Bobbieslandy » 26 Apr 2010 23:43

Hi,

My petrol tank doesnt seem to have a vent, admitedly i haven't looked around the tank for a breather pipe yet but there's been a few questions asked about vented and non vented filler caps. Mine doesn't seem to be vented, should it be?

If i leave the cap on for a few days you can hear the tank de-pressurise when you unscrew it. it's definately de-pressurising, it's not a vaccuum.

Thanks,

Rob.

Non N/A caps are vented. Either you some how have a N/A cap or yours is pluged. Not sure how yours is but my spare came apart quite easily (which I did to replace the foam layer). Press down on the centre part against the spring and the little pin that holds it in slides out and it all comes apart. Find where the vent hole is and make sure it's clear. (Assuming you can't clear it with out taking it apart.

Yes on a UK spec car you should have a vented cap. You can take it apart like Spyder suggests. Or do you have a spare cap you could substitute?

NA spec cars were vented through the charcoal canisters in the emmissions control equipment, hence the cap was sealed to stop fumes escaping to atmosphere.

Is this the same for early (76) UK caps ? I can't see a pin and I would like dismantle to replace the rubber seal

Don't know if older caps are different other than size (only have new cars[:)]). Here's a pic of smaller one disassembled and one assembled. The only thing missing from disassembled one is black seal (yet to be cut from neoprene.)
