DVLA rules on modded cars.

Have any of you guys read this and if so what do you think? What does this mean for the V8 conversion?

Shouldn't really apply to a V8 conversion as we still use so many of the original cars parts, i.e. bodyshell, suspension, transmission, rear axle etc. Even with uprated suspension most only use replacement consumables such as springs,shocks & bushes, the actual mechanics of the car aren't altered. Worst case scenario would be having to go for a vehicle check prior to re-registering as a V8, but should still be able to retain it's original registration mark.

Its been around for some time and is more biased towards stopping certain people from making a car from something that it isn't/ wasn't.
Generally if you are placing a V8 that has a traceable vin into a car that also has clear history no problem. However if you are attempting to put an engine in without a traceable number into a car that that is also maybe of dubious identity then you will have an issue. What also (hopefully) it should make more difficult is the number of people completing major work, swapping engines and sus etc then asking how they should change brake pads!Lots of people have been swapping identities to get free tax, and make the car look older than what it is.[8][:p]

As per previous comments, there's nothing there to make a V8 conversion difficult, it's not considered radical enough........

just a little note though, these rules been around about 27 years according to an article i was reading in i think practical classics and some mot stations are now quereing such things as older cars with carb conversions, mgbs etc that have had upgrades, it should not make a difference but its starting to creep in and there are apparently a few classic cars that have been upgraded to cope better in modern times that have ended up q plated which then also took their free tax status away so its something to keep an eye on and not assume it will be ok.....[:(] i used to check on these things closely as was getting ready to v8 a morris minor..... well why not??? [:p] and the points system seemed to let me get away with it if i did things gradually but the government is staarting to clamp down on a lot car wise to help them with their "green" policies....
so beware...

just gonna check the brakes on the tr now..... er they are by the wheels arent they??? sorry chubster, had to [:p]

I agree with most of what is said.It is food for thought I suppose. Also it will be up to the MOT tester I guess and how well they know the car. In my case they have known me and the car for 22 years.
I know when I go for the test, it is more about how good the car looks and what new things I might have done.
As for original parts, yes a V8 conversion does retain most of the original car, albeit with a new axle ratio in my case and a V8 gearbox. to the naked eye though and for all intents and purposes it is original spec.

the v8 route problem occurs when someone gets officious and logs car details in finding a 2.0 litre not a v8, despite the cars being fitted with v8s the conversion means spec changes..... i think most of us use the same mot stations though so should not have problems unless that station gets clamped down on, be interesting to hear if anyone has had problems though...
