Rim sizes...again

Hi all,

I seem to remember people saying you will have trouble trying to put anything bigger than a 16" rim on the TR7/8's. Why is that? With the right sized tire, the outside measurements are almost the same.

Stock: 185/70-13" OD=23.2"
Mag: 205/40-17" OD=23.5"

And, the 17" tire is only about 1/2" wider that the 13" tire.

So what's the issue?

I think people have more trouble with the wheel offsets (+ or -) when changing their wheels.

Martin, unless all your driving is on billiard table smooth roads,
take care with ultra low profile tyres, on a 7.

These cars were designed to use the tyre bag as part of the
suspension. I once drove an 8, with 17s, [so they can be made to
order, & fit], & it was worse than dreadful.

That car had rolled wing lips, done to clear 195 15s, & had no
trouble with the 17s. Sorry, I did not look for the other figures
on its tyres.

And potholes will blow out your tires. Definitely! I have seen too many of those. And a bad one will damage the alloy wheels too. [:(]

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a set of 14" superlites, the look i'm after is the negative offset of the Rally cars. I'm not going to roll or extend the arches, i just want that deep dish look on the front and an even deeper dish on the back.

does anyone have any ideas on what width and offset i should be looking at? i'm not too fussed on overall width, 185mm on the front and 195 / 205 on the back should be fine i think that may equate to about 6.5" width rims.

Thanks for any help, i've spent too many years just buying wheels that never look quite right! i'm not too fussed on having different sized wheels on the front and back, they'll be no spare anyway!

If you are keeping with 14" wheels, and the front will have 185 tires, you may end up choosing 60 or 65 profile, and a 6.5" or maybe 7" width wheel will be about right. For offset, the TR's OEM wheels have a 25mm + offset. You should keep it around that.

For the rear, if you choose 205 tires, the profile might end up around 50 or 55, then the wheel width might have to be around 8". Offset might end up being less than +25mm to keep from rubbing issues. That would add a little more deep dished look.
