I did switch to the Edelbrock Thunder 500CFM. The manifold is an Offenhauser. I did the carb, the PO did most everything else. Right now there is a very noisy external fuel pump mounted on the bulkhead in front of the tank. This winter when I do the sender I plan on checking/ replacing the in tank pump. Hey questions are great. If I can answer some it makes me feel like I'm making up for all of the questions I've asked.

When changing the manifold, getting parts piecemeal, where would you look for the gaskets needed? Moss, Rimmer, Wedgeshop ... please name any others. Thanks.

I am partial to the Edelbrock 4 bbl, since I had the Carter branded AVS when I was younger. I rebuilt it, tweaked it for the street, and had no problems for 8 years. [^]

There is no gasket for the manifold/head interface except the tin valley gasket that covers the top of the motor. However, you will want to use a smear of silicone sealant around the water ports at the front & rear of the heads. There is a gasket between the carb & the top of the manifold but that will be supplied with the carb assuming it is a new one.

There's no doubt that Edelbrocks are easier to tune.

I understand the valley gasket is offered in tin (steel) or composite. The steel eventually rusts. Which works out best over the long run? Would paint keep the rust away?

It didn't work for the body work - LOL.

Actually it is the head gaskets that are either tin or composite. The composites are thicker so they lower the compression ratio a tad but are more forgiving.

With the valley gaskets there is the tin type and the later part that is coated with teflon which won't rust. I don't think it would be a good idea to paint it.

While googling around I found that you can get tin exhaust gaskets.
