Heritage Certificate lists Body number - Question

Postby Jolyon39 » 16 Sep 2009 11:43

Hello,

This ex Hong Kong car is registered in NZ under its body number. No chassis plate is present anywhere.

The heritage certificate lists two body numbers separated by a /

The number I have on a small silver plate (Not screen printed named plate) is T078556CG

What is the other part of the number on the certificate, the number 73997. Would it be on a plate? Where would that plate be located?

I know of three possible locations for plates with Body numbers

1. Headlight panel gutter under bonnet lip on LHS
2. Under windscreen and plastic dash almost at the windscreen. The flat surface before the metal for the windscreen frame just above the steering column
3. I have seen them on the turret top

I just want to get all the numbers correct on this reshell I am working on. It is more important because the car is registered by body number.

That is a difficult one. Maybe the chassis number is stamped in the turret top? Here in Holland all chassis numbers are stamped in the body because of regulations. Maybe the number is under the paint?

Other location could be in the rain gutter/channel above the doors.

If you want the easiest way i would use the number on the registration license, otherwise you need to change the chassis number on your registration but i guess that would not be easy. But if you want it right...

Jolyon,

Your chassis plate should be on the n/s drivers door. Do you have two rivet holes under the door latch or not.

You can still get the Chassis plates so you could have a new one made.

Hi Jim,

This is a reshell, I have many parts off the original car but need to change the shell ID.

The NEW shell (a 1981 model) also has 81/XXX (x being some number I do not remember) stamped into the A Pillar near the hinges and the same number stamped into the door internal panel. I will drill a hole through the ones on the A pillar for the alarm door switches and the doors do not matter. (Yes doors have the later locks but I can fix that.)

So really, I just do not understand the Heritage certificate number.

Why the "/" through the number? Are there possibly two different numbers on a shell?

confusing indeed. Can you email the heritage motor centre and ask for an explanation?

Can't recall where, how or why I have this info but I thought that the body shell no was different to the chassis/VIN no and was usually localted on a plate which is either in the rain channel near to the petrol filler cap in the boot or in the rain channel at the laeding edge of the bonnet. As I say don't know where this info came from and haven't the time to go check it out on my car right now. I may be talking total rubbish! [:I]

Jolyon, I am not 100% sure about this but I believe that the body shells may have had two body numbers;

One number for the unpainted/untrimmed shell, then a second number for the shell after painting/trimming. Don't ask why - another BL foible!

I believe that the number usually used to ID the body is the trimmed body number.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tony

Trimmed and untrimmed, that sounds logical. I had another car that had two numbers and I thought this meant it was a reshell.

With this amunition I will approach Heritage to ask.

-----
Does anyone know which number goes under the Bonnet hinge area in the headlight panel gutter?? (My guess is untrimmed as this is partly hidden once they fit the bonnet (hood to Americans).

Apparently the way to tell which number is which is that the untrimmed/unpainted number will have been sprayed over when the shell was trimmed/painted, so the tag should be in the body colour.

The second number should have been affixed after painting.

Of course!!!

The one in the headlight panel gutter, under thebonnet leading edge, is alsways painted over.

So - untrimmed number on heallight panel or on metal above dasboar

Trimmed number on Turret
