New Triumph DVD

Postby John Clancy » 11 Sep 2009 18:29

This time it's the Spitfire/GT6/Herald up for the 'Code Name' treatment and I'm expecting the pressed discs from Sony Labs in a few weeks time. Again I've produced a second disc choc-full of extras and this one will be of more general appeal to Triumph owners of all models. Plenty of TR7's and 8's can be seen on the New Forest Run (a new edit of John Davies's excellent footage), and Mark May's outstanding TR7 V8 Works rally replica can be seen looking stunning at this year's TSSC International Weekend amongst other wedges.

But in the main it's Spitfire's and GT6's of course and like the TR7 these models have a great story to tell which in the main is told by the people that engineered, race prepared and styled the cars.

I'm rather chuffed with this one. Plenty of detail, photographs and a preview at www.triumphdvd.co.uk

John-I love the Bullet DVD! I just found on some VHS tapes a bunch of vintage Triumph movies going as far back as LeMans in 1953. The Group 44 racing films are the most impressive. I also have one made by John Buffum too. Included was a film on the Rally TR7 in 1976 Mintex Rally but it does not have a title? I am in the process of getting them copied to DVD and then get some editing done on them to clean up the sound and images. Is there going to be a Bullet 2?

John-I am going to let the cat out of the bag, so here is what I have and only the TR7/8 & Group 44 stuff is going to make it to DVD for preservation.

•“Buffum & Coâ€￾ TR7 Rally in 20 Stages & Criterium Du Quebec <b>GETTING COPIED</b>
•No title filming of the Works Rally TR7s OOE937R & OOE938R registrations in the 1976 Mintex Rally <b>GETTING COPIED</b>
•“A Meeting of Championsâ€￾ 1973 SCCA National Championships at Road Atlanta featuring the “Male Chauvinist Pig Trophyâ€￾ race with Bob Tullius <b>GETTING COPIED</b>
•“Road Racings White Waveâ€￾ Group 44 TR6, MGB, GT6 & Spitfire @ Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen & Lime Rock with BL Commercials for the Spitfire, TR6 & MGB <b>GETTING COPIED</b>
•“Sebring Belongs To The Eaglesâ€￾ Group 44 TR8s driven by Bob Tullius, Bill Adam, Pat Bedard & John Kelly in the Coca-Cola 12 Hour using Good Year Street Tires <b>GETTING COPIED</b>
•“Two of a Kind-TransAm Championsâ€￾ with Brock Yates about Group 44 and the Jaguar XJS <b>GETTING COPIED</b>
•“To Win Againâ€￾ Group 44 development & racing of the Jaguar XJR-5 <b>GETTING COPIED</b>

I have watched them a few times and the tapes are at the point where they could not be viewed much longer. It is nice to keep some history alive.

BMIHT own the copyright's and have already issued many of them on DVD. You need to have a good look at www.motorfilms.com . Many are hidden in amongst the Motoring Films Quarterly series. 'This Is Triumph', 'The Triumph Marque' and a couple of other Triumph films can be found on 'The Best of Standard Triumph'.

BMIHT do prosecute worldwide so don't offer copies anywhere.

Bullet Reloaded is a possibilty but it depends on how well the existing DVD's sell.

JOhn-I dont see anything about the Group 44 or Buffum on the website for Motorfilms.com.....those are the ones I want to get copied off of VHS which in a few more years will be too far deteriorated and since to this point do not seem to exist.

I'm really looking forward to this video. My 2nd car owned, first car bought new, and my first Triumph are all the same 1970 GT6+. I wore it out but kept it and expect it to rehab it as a post-retirement project in a few years.

Agreed, they haven't issued either of those films yet but I did speak to David Weguelin about 'Buffum & Co.' a couple of years ago and it is one that's on the cards.

I'd keep a copy on DVD myself. I've done just that with 'Buffum & Co.' and the 1980 RAC Rally. But I put copies on several different makes of DVD+R as some deteriorate very quickly (less than 10 years in the latest soak tests). Sony discs have gone past 100 years and fortunately I use Sony for the TriumphDVD releases.

I hope I can Chris but not sure at the moment.

I see I forget to answer the NTSC question above. I did try to contact the Spitfire magazine in the US but never got a response so I presume it's gone under. There is particularly little interest in the USA for Triumph now and given that it's another £1,366 to get NTSC copies pressed I just can't do it without support from Triumph dealers and specialists. Even Rimmers aren't interested in carrying stocks so you can imagine how small the sales are. Having said that it looks like the Triumph Sports Six Club are going to sell all four of the present TriumphDVD's so they could finally sell a few. I think Stag Owners Club members may start asking their officials why they can get a Stag DVD from a rival club when their own club that is wholly Stag, and for whom the DVD was made, do not offer it to their own members.

Remember though that any computer with a DVD drive can play any DVD (without a region code - no TriumphDVD has a region code) and equipment being manufactured now can generally play NTSC and PAL.

This is the best DVD I've produced yet so if it doesn't sell I'll know it's time to call it a day and try something else. I'll just have to wait and see. Trailer at www.bfcc.biz/triumphdvd/bombtrailer.wmv
