I am sat with my laptop on a wet and wild bit of wales coast! I'd rather be with my TR[:(].You know what they say about wales 'if you can't see the mountains it's raining,if you can see the mountains it's going to rain'.I was planning to make this trip in my TR before it broke no wonder it didn't wanna come[:D] Thanks for all the info on my gearbox replacement. I have all the parts on order so next week is 'spanner time'.I had a worried few moments about the picture posted showing the full box with bushes attached.OMG OMG I HAVE A BIT MISSING.[:0] The actual gear stick mounting transfers over from my old box then? Phew[:X].

Yep. Some subtle differences in the gearchange unit depending on vehicle so best to use yours anyway. Outside of the mounting bushes, not much to wear on them.

I see thanx underdog.I will let you all know how the swap goes. I am hopeing the new gearbox will take away the whine I have had too.The car sounds a bit like an electric motor or as my ever supporting husband says "sounds like a milk float very sporty"

The whine might come from the differential. that's where mine is, not loud but it's there.

I thought the whine came from

"You have too many cars"
"You never seem to finish them"
"How much are you spending on them?"

Like Spyder said, could be the rear. I get a little from the box in the reduction gears, 1st - 3rd. If you have a whine in 4th, which is straight through the box, then it's probably the rear. Usually changes up with the load, on & off throttle. If the rear is whining, it's usually the pinion bearings. You should know once you get the new box installed.

Yah, I have that whine too but I can more successfully block that one out.[:D]

I've heard that bananas will quash most whines. [}:)]

I don't know if a banana, shoved in the mouth, or a bottle of STP
poured in would be most effective, but I'd recommend you have your
running shoes on, when you try the experiment.

Thanx for the good news guys[;) so the diff is shot as well[:0].As advise goes In my case some new shoes, perfume, jewellery etc cure my wine[:)].
I am 99% my diff is OK the noise I get is more upfront.maybe not a whine but a strange engine note.Like the noise an industrial electric motor makes when working.Anyway first things first out with the old box all the parts are in so it's me and the spanners now[:I]

If it sounds like an electric motor, check your alternator.
