Touring Checklist

Just about to head out for the 5 hour trip to Taupo for some track time tomorrow & I'm just going thru my checklist.

There's your basics:

Oil
Water
Brake Fluid
Spare petrol
Overnight bag
Tool bag
Small Trolley jack
Rags

Then there are the gadgets:

Mobile phone
MP3 player
Laptop
Camera
GPS

The race gear:
Fireproof suit (no cape)
Helmet
Shoes
Set of 4 rims + race tyres
Datalogger
Stopwatch

Finally there are the snacks:
Bottle of coke
3 packets of S&V Hula Hoops

No room left for the wife! So that's why I bought a 2-door. [}:)]

Well that must have been one stupid joke too many.

With the car packed I fired it up & there was no oil pressure!. Turned it off, turned it on again. Nothing. Whacked the oil pump with a hammer & turned it on again. Nothing. Took oil pump off, inspected it, nothing obvious, packed it with vaseline & turned on motor. Oil pressure back! [:)] This takes over 3 hours & it is now after 5pm but I'm still keen to go. However. While the bonnet is up & the motor idling I see the alternator getting a bit of a wobble on & I find the front alternator housing has snapped just above the bolt hole. Bugger!! No chance of getting another alternator at this time of night so it's declared a bust. Weekend called off.

Beer o'clock.

Final nail in the coffin, because the Mrs had planned a weekend by herself she'd gone & hired a swathe of chick flick DVDs. [xx(]

While I was in the garage a ex-patriot Britisher walked past with his England Team jacket & English Bulldog & I couldn't resist think out loud & I said "You English make terrible cars."

Hay Peter, you are bringing all this trouble on yourself. You're
giving the thing too much warning, with all this packing of spares &
gear.

If I'm going somewhere, I pump up the spare, & check the wheel
brace, & jack are there, a few days before the trip. Then I get the
car, throw a couple of spare pairs of jocks in the boot, & go.

You should never give your car time to get nervous with all this
preparation. If you are going to cart all this gear around with you,
you had best fit a tow bar, & stick all that gear in a trailer. A
tow bar is good protection from the MG boys, too, with their lousy
brakes, for those track days.

If you hook the trailer on quick like, & shoot through, the car
won't have time to throw a wobbly at you.

Pity about the track time mate.

The GF sneaks those in on occasion. Says it is a comedy & part way through I realize I have been Chick Flicked!!

Too bad about the car. I just did some track time with mine this past tuesday evening. Still having to conserve the brakes. I'm now thinking I need to get the rears to do a little more work to help out. Just when you think you are done, another project looms.

Well if you wanted a car that starts everytime, never breaks down and can only be serviced my the main dealer you should have got a Toyota. Then you could watch chick flicks with the wife every weekend [:D]

I am starting to think that my car is smarter than I am.

I would never have noticed that broken alternator mount if I hadn't had the oil pump problem & it would've either have failed or thrown the fan belt in the middle of nowhere. Broken alternator mounts don't have a red light so the car had the conjure up a problem that did have a warning light for to get my attention.

Or it could've been a coincidence.

But this track day was part of a series I don't usually do so missing it had no consequence. If it had been the Intermarque series at Manfeild I would've lost club points.

So I've just spent a day working round the house when I should've been ripping up the asphalt and instead of feeling bitter I had to conceed I really was being more usefully employed getting the house ready for the sale. I did over the garden, fixed a light fitting & then cleaned up the garage. Finally as a gesture of forgiveness, considering I was pretty pissed I was yesterday afternoon, I washed the 7.
