What to Remove

Postby FI Spyder » 27 Aug 2009 17:27

I am stripping my $100 yellow TCT down for paint. I'm going to build a rotisserie so I can get at the bottom as the undercoating has hardened and cracked in a few places allowing what looks likes some surface rust. I think I'll be painting it some shade of yellow that will be a few shades off of the original Tumeric Yellow. Basically everything will be out but I was wondering if I should take off the windshield trim or just paint around it?

How hard is it to take off without damaging it and how does it reattach?

The bonnet and trunk lid will be off of course. Is there any benefit to removing the doors for painting or should (can) they be painted in place (edges/inside) if this is a close to original colour respray?

You will get spray mist through in the gaps if you spray with doors etc in place unless you mask of the areas underneath.

The front screen surround is held in place by the window sealant.
Once removed it will be pretty difficult to replace. You have to fit the trim when the sealant hasn't fully hardened. So if you want to remove it you'll have to take th efront screen out also.

Hi,

I have pulled out thre windscreens on 7's and confirm that both screen and trim come out together. I can not see how you would get just the trim out without bending it.

The club chairman got his window replaced but they made dents in it aws they were removing it.

Cale's green coupe had the window removed by mistake (they mixed up work orders), then broke it as it sat on the garage floor, so they replaced it, (and they mistakenly took it down to bare metal).

I thought you might be able to take it off carefully with a hair dryer to soften the mastic (or what ever you want to call it) then reglue it back on with something. But maybe it's better to just tape it and paint around it.

Beans: I'm not worried about paint getting in the door as you can't see it anyway and it would be a smaller colour shift from what is already there, if that's what you meant.
