Headlight flash - there may be troubles ahead!

Postby macmattom » 23 Aug 2009 22:58

Hello again everybody. The questions will be coming thick and fast from me from now on as another TR7 restoration rapidly approaches completion (but I suppose that's relative as hopefully it'll be taxed and tested in a couple of months, but has taken me nearly 3 years to get here!!).

Apart from the annoyance of terrible fuse connections, all my electrics appear to be in really good order. The only thing I can't get to work at the minute is the headlights to pop-up when I use the flash (or pass) switch. The lamps illuminate but make no attempt to lift.

Does this indicate a simple fault (maybe a common relay) or does this point to something more sinister?

Thanks again for any help,

Mac.

...so if I change that for a serviceable item, all should be fine?

Can anybody help me? I've changed the Pektron unit but get the same result - lamps illuminate but pods don't lift. Pods work fine with normal lights!

Is the ONLY fault likely to be the Pektron unit or is there a relay or fuse or anything else that could be causing the problem?

Thanks for any advice,

Check all connectors and earth points and the relays to start with.
And then there might be some problems inside the lifting mechanism itself ...

Whilst you are cleaning things, its always worth cleaning the master light switch as well - troubles seem to start here.

Hmmm.. does the column switch have only one contact for the flash+illuminate circuit, or are they separated? I'm just wondering if the column switch might be at fault?

Hi Bottomstop - your suggestion interests me! I haven't looked that closely at the switch and won't get to the car until Saturday, but should there be 2 contacts for the "flash" function? I have a gut feeling there is only one, but will have a closer look at the weekend.

Thanks for the tip,

Mac.

Sorry to go off topic here but I was wondering if it is possible to wire the lights so the 'pop' and 'illuminate' are on seperate switches? Long story but my lights will light up but don't pop.A idiot 'specialist' has butcherd my wiring so can I just put a live and earth to the pop motor and activate it? I know it will involve more than my 'simples' idea but it's the thought that counts eh[:D]

I am having serious problems tracing the wiring for the pektron unit for the head-light flash and really, really would appreciate some help.

The pektron wiring loom has completely baffled me, but can anybody shed any light (awful pun, not intended - sorry) on whether there are any pektron units other than for the headlight flash? The one fitted into my car has a vented front, as though for cooling or maybe as an opening for a buzzer warning. The auto-electrician assisting me is convinced that the pektron unit is a warning buzzer for the seat-belts, and the head-light flash pektron unit must be hidden elsewhere, but I remain to be convinced.

Once I've ascertained this, I'll post some pictures and seek further advice as I am now dependant on solving this before I progress.

Thanks in advance,

Mac.

Yes, Pektron manufactured different units for different jobs, but they look almost similar on the outside.
The US type Pektron does something entirely different (audible warning among other things)
compared to the r.o.w Pektron unit. Found that out when I rewired my car (about a decade ago)
to get flash-to-pass functionality in my ex-NA TR8.

So my auto-electrician might be correct! I will try to trace all 6 wires going into the unit (will be next week) and see if this helps me out in any way, but if this is an audible warning, where would I start looking for the head-light flash pektron? I've had the car stripped to the bare bones and don't remember any other pektron.

Is there a relay or other component I should be looking for? The only wiring diagram I have is the HBL which is next to useless - does anybody have a wiring diagram for a 1977 UK FHC that might help me out?

As you might be able to tell - I'm totally confused by this [:(].

Cheers,

Mac
