Mac,
The VIN number is on the V5 for your car, so presuming you have that then you can have a new one made up (as I am doing at the mo) as long as you send your supplier registration document proof (V5) that the number you want is for the car its going on.

If you dont have a V5 or vin number or any numbers on the car.... then fun times lie ahead [:D]

We have slightly a different registration system but do what I have seen done.

Buy a wreck with the paper work, drill out the rivets and swap over the chassis plate. There is also a guy on Ebay in the UK who sells new, blank plates.

This will give you your V5 documents. Lots of cheap wrecks available in the UK and USA.

Hi,
Any old MOT certificates will have 'a' chassis number relating to the registration number.

The Testers manual states the following-

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN or chassis number) is required on all vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1980. except those which are
. kit cars
. amateur built vehicles

If a VIN cannot be found the vehicle presenter should be advised of the likely location of the VIN and to thoroughly search for the number with the aid of the registration certificate. If following this action the VIN cannot be found the vehicle presenter should contact the nearest Vehicle Registration Office.

Good luck,
Cheers John

John,

Thanks very much for that tip - I think there was an old MoT certificate or two in with all the paperwork, so I guess it will be a manic search through the file tomorrow. That will be brilliant if I can find one, as it will make my life a whole lot easier.

I have bought one of those blank plates off ebay which will be going onto the top of the turret inside the engine bay, but will that suffice or do I need another plate in the boot channel as well?

Cheers for your help guys, hopefully it could be problem eased (not yet solved!!).

Hi Mac,

You can apply to the DVLA for a V5 for your car.
You need to fill in form V62, which you can download from their site. It does have a box to fill in for the VIN, but states if you don't fill this in, it could delay your application, which means its not mandatory, so just leave it blank. Send off the form with £25 and you should get the V5 in your name, with the VIN, problem solved!!

Well, I submitted my V62 yesterday. The guy at the DVLA didn't think there'd be a problem because the car was originally registered in the UK and was already on their database.

They will have to contact the previous owner which could cause a problem as he's emigrated to Australia but if they get no joy there they will either accept my request for a V5 or they might want to inspect the car as a formality. Either way it will probably up to 10 weeks. Hopefully it will turn out alright in the end, even if I have to jump through a few hoops.

Thanks for the advice - if I remember I'll post a thread with an update when anything happens as I think others might be in a similar position.

Cheers again,

Mac
