Sidelight live to one pole of the marker light, and indicator live to the other. When the sidelights are off the sidelight live is at 0V so the light will flash in time with the indicators. When the sidelights are on the sidelight live is at 12V so when the indicators flash on, the marker light will flash off as both poles are at 12V meaning a potential difference of 0 and therefore no current and no light!

I didn't realize that the sidelight feed would be at 0 V when the light was off... I assumed it was just open.

Much easier than the relay method!

That sytem sounds simple. However where is the earth ?
I don't realy understand electrics that much I am learning though with a 7 [:)] I thought you need an earth to make things work? my markers only have two wires if one goes to sidelight + and one to Indicater + then no earth?

From wikipedia: "The cold resistance of tungsten-filament lamps is about 1/15 the hot-filament resistance when the lamp is operating." So the earth for the 5W bulb is via 2 25W cold indicator bulbs that don't get hot enough to light up - I think this is what is happening. Lucas would be proud - using dodgy earths to good affect.

Three years ago, someone put up a wiring diagram with two relays just for this purpose. Side lights on with regular and superseded by the turn indicator system. Wish I had kept a copy!

i plan to fit the orange side markers wired to be indicators, but not been keen on the red rears, so gone with an option meaning a bit more work for me, am welding up the rear side holes and smoothing them in with the body.....

As I said way back up there - the lights can be wired to both sidelights and flashers - and they work. The 'earth' rsistance is much much less - because there are several bulbs all sitting in parallel - so the 'earth' resistance is actually almost zero!

<b>"Put orange ones in the rear too maybe ???"</b>

My thoughts exactly, Beans, and something I am planning to do. To wire them to the indicators, is it just a matter of running a couple of wires from the front and rear indicators...or is it a bit more complicated than that?

Your laws are different than ours, so I'm guessing then that a flashing red rear light is illegal in U.K. or Netherlands ???

Personally I hate the coloured side markers on my car (too bad the law in Canada thinks otherwise.....) Honestly I've considered for manhy years now to remove mine and put the plastic blanking plates in place of the markers. The front I'd leave black, and maybe consider painting the rear bodycolour to blend in ....(will source a set or two when/if we visit England next year)
If they were available, I'd maybe also consider a clear marker and side light for my car, and just add coloured bulbs so they would appear the appropriate colour when working.

Yes! Indicators in the rear - safetywise, making the indicators more visible from the side, as some of the other posters have suggested.

And IIRC it has to be an orange indicator in Britain rather than red (apart from cars imported from the US, I suppose)

I just want to get some proper use from mine, which at the moment aren´t even connected (Am I right in saying cruise lights aren´t a legal requirement in the UK?)

Now...back to my original query - is it just a matter of running some wires from the existing indicators, or is it more complex than that?

All I did was take a live feed from the front sidelight and earth it for side markers.or if you want indicaters live feed from the front indicator and earth.should be two wires on the orange marker green is live on mine.[:D] I like em as criuse lights not a legal requiremant but legal.
