I use a one litre AFT plastic bottle, with a built in tube, for
putting oil down the dip stick tube, with a suitable length of
plastic hose, that fits that tube.

Once the end of the hose is in the gear box, I upend the bottle, &
fit it beside the battery, where it sits, while the oil runs. You
can sqeese the bottle to speed things up, if required.

I used to use a funnel the sane way, but I found it less secure, if
not held, leaving a big clean up to follow.

I have another gadget that works well for refilling it. I went to the local boat shop, and bought one of those pumps that screw into a quart bottle, and are used to pump lower end oil into outboard motors and outdrives. It lets me do the whole job while under the car, and I can fill the thing in about 5 minutes.

Hmmm lots of different ideas on types of oil to use in the gearboxbut the story is(from an x bl dealer who worked on trs when they where new).on the first production cars with the t4 speed gearbox the gearbox oil used was ep80 and in the axle ep90.when they first stated fitting the 5 speed gearbox the orginal spec was ep70/80.This however caused gear selection problems 2nd gear when the gearbox was cold and in colder climates.Bl then changed the spec on a bulletin to 5w/20 engine oil this had catastrophic problems with bearing failure and gear noise. They then changed the spec to ATF oil (the pink/red stuff)which eliminated the selection problem and stopped the gearbox bearings distroying themselfs.Due to modern advances in oil and bearing technology and additives applied to new oils and also the introduction of synthetisc based oils their are a lot of permitations on oil you can use .This will differ to where you live.

ATF is not described in the same terms, generally described as 'High viscosity index, with small viscosity change with temperature'.

From the Esso blurb:
<i>Viscosity
Esso ATF DEXRON®-III / MERCON® is
available in one grade. Compared to SAE 5W-20
engine oils and SAE 75W-80W gear oils, it has
about the same high temperature viscosity with
approximately a 5°C fluidity advantage in the low
temperature operating range.
Low Temperature Performance
For trouble-free operation of power shift,
hydrostatic and automatic transmissions at low
temperatures, a Brookfield Viscosity of 100 Poise
should not be exceeded. Manual transmissions
can operate with fluid viscosities as high as 1000
Poise, but for ease of gear shifting in cold
weather, a 500 Poise viscosity is more desirable.
Typical Properties
Density, kg/m3 855
Flash Point, °C 180
Pour Point, °C -48
Kinematic Viscosity,
cSt @ 40°C 37
cSt @ 100°C 7.1
Brookfield Viscosity
cP @ -40°C 17,000
cP @ -35°C 8,000
cP @ -30°C 3,300
cP @ -20°C 1,000

At tech school, I was always told that ATF is similar to 10w motor oil but it has very high detergent levels and additives to reduce shearing.
An old-timers trick for high mileage engines that have a lot of gunk inside is to drain the oil, put in ATF, run the car a couple hundred miles, then drain it out and change the filter and add oil. It's supposed to clean the inside of the engine.

LT77 gearbox.

Motul gear oil.

That simple.

Cheers,

Alec

Alex

Motul Gear 300 is a 100% fully synthetic gear oil.

Is that the one you use?

Either of the Motul gear oils will do - according to Ken Tomlinson, who probably knows more about LT77 boxes than the rest of us put together.

Cheers,

Alec

As per our friend Jclay in Texas, the Pennsoil MTF has dispelled all of the lubrication and drivebility issues with an LT77 that has been properly overhauled. That is, for we who live on the west side of the Atlantic Ocean. This Motul juice is as unknown to us as is your Mr Tomlinson. The prefered gearbox oil issue was resolved some months ago. It is respectfully suggested to those unaware, please search the forum for those topics dealing with the LT77 and gearbox oils.

If you know the answer Mildred - why not spit it out ? In the Uk we don't know the various mysterious makes you quote - we do understand viscosity ratings and oil specifications - so that's what will be really useful to all the 5 speeders. Perhaps if this can be found - it could be made into a 'sticky' for easy reference ?

The Pennzoil MTF (for Manual Transmission Fluid) is the same lubricant as the GM Liquid Gold, but much less costly.
It can probably be had at any good shop selling Pennzoil products anywhere in the civilized gearhead world:

[ Pennzoil SYNCROMESH, Manual Transmission Fluid. Part No 220230
. http://www.pennzoil.com/#/transmission- ... sion-fluid
. Fully Paraffinic Mineral Oil for certain Tremec manual gearboxes. Uniqely developed for General Motors
. and Chrysler gearboxes. Meets GM 12345349 (spec 9985648) and Chrysler 4874464 (spec. MS9224) ]

In fact I can even get it here in little rural Osthammar (pop. 4500). It's said that Pennzoil is the original manufacturer
subcontracting the GM Liquid Gold: aka "GM Vehicle Care Synchromesh Transmission Fluid, No 1#12345349"
which I personally prefer since it's easier yet to get hold of here. Bugger the cost, the gearbox loves it..!

Hi,

I couldn't find a London stockist of either Pennzoil MTF or the GM MTF over the web.

However Morris's website lists a MTF specifically for a Ford gearbox and the LT77. Has anyone had any experience of this product as I'm supposed to have a dealer close to me who can order it in. It's priced at £7.00 + vat for a litre or £25.50 + vat for 5 litres.

Grinnall's used to recommend Morris Golden Multifilm for his TR7V8 engines and using it was required for his warranty.

Hi Mildred,

USA source of Motul

Ken is the man who knows more about our competition boxes than anyone else.

Best manual transmission fluid....

Postby Sean Roth » 11 Jan 2014 12:44

What is the best manual transmission oil to use?

I was planning to use Redline 75w90 but I wanted to check here first.
