Holes in the floor and a tag under the paint

Postby tipo158 » 29 May 2009 03:45

Now that I have the sound deadening off of the floor under the seat, I have discovered a few things that I am wondering why they are there.

1. As shown in Beans' photo of the floor of the car (in my 70s GM build quality topic), there is a 4" (or so) hole, covered by a plate that is held in place by the sound deadening. There is one on each side of the car.

2. Just behind the hole above is a much smaller hole with a grommet. There is also one of each of these on each side of the car.

3. On the (US) driver side, there is a 2" x 4" (or so) plastic tag that is attached by a wire loop to a small plate near the base of the seat. The wire goes under the plate and is clamped in place by bolts from the outside of the car. I can't see anything written on the tag, but one side of the tag is painted in the body color.

What are the purpose of these things?

The 4 large holes in the floor have probably something to do with the manufacturing process. I welded those up in my cars, as the add some extra strength, especially at the back of the floor near lower rear axle mount.

Don’t know about the smaller holes but they can come in handy of you got water in the foot-wells, remove rubber plug and water drains out.

4 large holes? So, do I have two more awaiting me when I remove the sound deadening in the footwells?

Looking at your photo, I noticed that there wasn't any panel seam goop on your car. Did they stop doing that by the time your car was built or did someone do a very good job of cleaning that stuff out?

4 large holes. Weren't the floorpans mounted to the jigs / dollies by these as the cars passed down the production line?

Does anyone know what this tag is?

Yes Adam is right - the 4 large holes were used to locate a supporting jig as the car bodyshell passed along the production line, once the car had wheels & came off the line the holes were filled with a metal bung.

No idea about the plastic tag - never come across that before.

The large holes - are filled with the plugs - which are NOT held in by the sound-deadening - they should be firmly locked in place. The 'tag' is surely the pressure pad device intended to sense if there is someone sitting in the seat - and therefore brings on the seat belt reminder! I threw mine away!!

Sorry, but, at least on my car, they were held in place on the sound deadening material and that is it. There wasn't even any seam sealing goop under the "plug". Well, there was a bit of the goo, but not much.

I have a hard time calling the part that filled the hole a "plug". It is a 4" diameter disk, maybe 1/32" thick, made of mild steel.

As far as the tag, it is definitely not a device for sensing whether the driver seat is occupied. For starters, it was definitely attached to the chassis when it was painted and a sensor in the seat would have been put in after the chassis was painted. Also, the wire loop that holds it in place is not insulated, electrical-type wire; it is like safety wire.

Next idea?

The metal disc in your picture is not the original part. The factory fitted item was similar to the metal lid from a paint tin. It's a very tight fit but moisture can become trapped in the outer lip which can rust away.

Rimmers and others supply that flat metal disc which has to be sealed into place.

The metal disc in the photo was under the sound deadening. Between the paint lines (between primer and the body color paint) and the location of the seam sealer goo, I am fairly certain that the sound deadening had not been lifted since the car was painted at the factory. So, those metal discs came from the factory and, thus, those would be the original parts. at least, for my car.

OK, so I have now removed the sound deadening from the driver side footwell, paying careful attention to the disk that fills the large hole. The disk is the same as the two that filled the hole under the seats. It looks like the disk was installed dry, but some of the sound deadening managed to flow between the disk and the body.

It was definitely installed before the sound deadening and before the chassis was painted.

TCT build date early '79 has the same flat disk that was held in place by goop (?) came out easily. Can't recall what Spider had as everything was like new so didn't pay it much attention..

Here's my LH Floorpan. You can see where I've welded a metal disc over the hole. The purple stuff is Kurust.
