Engine compartment picture request

Postby Mowog73 » 22 May 2009 18:07

We will soon be putting the parts car's engine into the restored car's engine compartment.

I was wondering if anyone had some picture of the engine compartment, without engine, showing where the wiring harness sort of goes; does it get attached anywhere? The parts car's engine compartment was a real mess.

Also, where does the coli go in a 77 TR7?

Which harness are you referring to? The main engine harness (from inside the car to the starter/oil PSI switch/ temp sender/ chokes...etc)?

Yes, the engine bay harness that comes through from the inside of the car in the transmission tunnel.

It would be hard to understand from a pic w/no engine installed. The harness basically comes thru the floor (tranny tunnel) and is ran thru a wire-loom atached to a engine to trans-mount bolt. Then another loom attached to the upper engine mount. Nothing exotic about the running of it. Just basically keep it away from hot points and/or where it may rub against metal while running/driving.

None of those wires in that harness get attached untill the engine and trans are bolted in place.

(guess i shoulda added...I have pics of my current engine compartment san's-engine/trans, but that harness is just laying off to the side untill I drop in my engine and trans)

Pretend that you are looking at the back of the engine where you would bolt on the transmission. If you look at my bolt holder, you will see three holding straps. They hold the wiring going to the starter as it runs across the back of the engine. Another cable runs down the left side of the trans tunnel to the back-up light switch and is held in place by straps on the transmission. (This cable has a jumper wire that goes to the starter relay!) Also note the position of the Negative cable from the battery and the two grounding straps.

jclay, there is something wrong with the fasteners in your photo. They are a strange color that I have never seen on a fastener in a TR7. Mine are all either black (grease) or reddish-brown (oxidized).

As far as the OP's coil question, on my 1976, the coil is mounted on the firewall on the (US) passenger side of the engine, between the battery tray and the transmission tunnel. It is vertically oriented. The top of the coil is a few inches lower than the battery tray.

As is mine tipo158. Mine is a 77. The amplifier thingy is also on one of the bolts holding the coil. Try to keep the coil mounted as high as possible in that position to ensure you have enough coil lead to the dizzy (mine is real close).

LOL!!! I wuz just noticing that of My bolts last night!!!

jclay, nice work. Good use of organization, I never thought of using styrofoam! I been using cardboard with a phillips-head to make the holes LOL.

Mowog, Id offer to post pic's of my install, and where I run/put everything, as I go along. But Im sure you will get further along than I. I keep getting sidetracked to the point of getting less and less time to reasemble my wedge :( (plus, Im a bit OCD, and keep finding things to clean/wax/paint before I drop the engine back in LOL)

Now that I have my Glass Blaster working, I am cleaning up all kinda parts.

I am too forgetful to throw all the bolts and nuts in a juice can.
