Brake cooling

Postby Underdog » 26 Apr 2009 13:40

Any of the competition guys running cooling ducts? My recent track day found the brakes to be fading badly by the end of each session. I have the Rimmer/Toyota kit fitted but the heat buildup is still a problem. Have the EBC Green pads but plan to upgade those to the Red. Also still have the shields on the back side of the rotors. My thought was they would act as a scoop with the flared forward portion but now that I look at them, the wider wheels & tires probably negate the effect. Also, I have the frt spoiler installed which looks like it would help force air to the rad but could be blocking air from getting to the brakes. Any thoughts, opinions or experiances much appreaciated. Like to do some thinking on this before I do my usual, expensive, overkill.

To get enough cooling air to th efront brakes you'll need the original BL spoiler or the late rally type.

I pressume you've vented discs? If so you'll need a supply of cool air to the centre of the disc. Like a larger diameter flexibel hose from spoiler to disc centre. An air duct in the spoiler might help further.

The spoiler I have is a fiberglass replica of the original TR8 plastic one. Is that what you refer to as the BL one?

Yep, that's the one. Also has the fog/driving lights as I do. Wondering if they may be blocking some air that would normally be funneled to the brake area.

My Tr7 has brake cooling ducts, and a one piece bumper/spoiler set up with holes that feed the ducts. It also has full floating ventilated discs on the front. It was a purpose built racer though, ran GT2 back in the day.

The attachements for the ducts look like ABS pipe bonded to the fiberglas spoiler and the brake end of the ducts just had the duct hose pointed at the disc, held in place with a wire.

Well, just pulled a wheel for a look see. I have the Rimmer kit with the ventilated Toyota rotors. I reinstalled the dust shields as I felt the forward scoop would aid cooling. Upon closer inspection, the shield is all but blocking the inner backside of the rotor where it needs air. The additional thickness of the vented rotors evedently closed up the air gap that would be there with the standard rotors. I'll be removing them. Also spotted a small crack in the rotor[:(] so looks like I'll be shoping for a new set of them as well.
