Dragstrip Today

Postby Underdog » 05 Apr 2009 22:20

Nice spring day & opening weekend at the local strip. My winter mods worked great, especially the Quaife and rear suspension mods. MUCH better grip off the line and actually bogged on the second run. Unfortunately only got two runs as it was a short day test & tune with a few oil downs.[:(] Best was a 13.84 @ 99.87mph. I'm sure there is some more to be had if the driver can get some practice. [;)]

Couple of photos. I had to include one of this young guy with a riding lawn mower and a 4 cyl motorcycle engine! I can't believe they let him run it. They had him go out with the junior dragsters and said for him to only do 1/8mile. Still he managed to get it through the traps at 60mph!! Lawn mower tires on frt and golf cart wheels & tires out back. Talk about Darwins Theory.

Brilliant! Good to see the Wedges fly. As a dragster neophyte I don't know if the numbers 13.84/99.37 are respectable but what are comparable cars doing & how much power do you have?

That lawn mower ought to have a rollcage, preferably a circular hoop arrangement so when he stops too quickly he does a few cartwheels. Didn't someone in the States get done for driving a motorised bar stool drunk recently?

Chunk/Phil on here has done a 13.30. I believe he has a similar combination. 3.9 engine with 3.45 rear gearing. Not been on a dyno with it so can't say as to the power. I need to work on my launch technique. However, my real interest is in doing track days on the road course. The first one will be on the 24th.

Yes, fella next to me commented on the Bar Stool DUI while we were watching the lawnmower guy attempting suicide.

Hi Underdog,
Respectable times indeed, a second quicker than i used to run with my old 3.5 combo (had a 3.08:1 out back). Your local track is probaly better prepped than our best track ( Santa Pod) As for some of those strips the NHRA visit [:D]
Cheers John.

Thanks John. Car ran low 15s with the stock 3.5, Holley, headers, harder tires and 3.45 open diff rear so I'm quite pleased now. If I could get it closer to mid 13s, I'd be estatic! I originally said I'd be happy if it just got into 13s though...does it ever end??[;)]

Yes, they do a pretty good job at keeping it sticky. New owners several years ago and they have spent quite a bit on upgrading the facility and promoting it. It's an IHRA track BTW. Not a huge venue but only 45 minutes away from me. Now I need to get the money together for some "real" track time.[:D]

underdog, how do you launch?? mine gets going starting in 2nd far better than 1st which is mostly useless with the 3.9 and 3.45 rear.

Hi Tom. The good run was bringing it out at 2000rpm and in 1st. Shifted 2nd, 3rd & 4th at 5800. Tires chattered a bit but nothing like the wheelspin I had last year. Next run I felt it wasn't hooking doing dry hops to the line so I dropped the revs and it bogged big time. I shifted at 6 grand on that one but the damage was already done as the 60ft time was almost 4 tenths slower.

On the street, I agree about the low first gear. It will blow the back tires off even punching it down after it is rolling. Whole different deal at the track where the surface wants to pull your shoes off. Nice rubber buildup & they spray with traction compound. I'm well out past the tree going into second so I'm not convinced 1st is not needed at the track. I just need more practice and more than two runs a day.[:(]

I like the number on the window. 666, the number of the beast.
(Iron Maiden song). I used 2500rpm in 1st to launch with 3:08 gears and 2800rpm in 1st with 3:45 gears. These revs vary with tyre compound and level of track prep, not to mention track temp.
Anything in the 13's is good in my book. I know a guy who ran a Rover in a Porsche and went 12.9. [:0]
But it was a 4.8 Litre engine. No substitute for cubes. [;)]

What is it with Triumph owners? Are we all devil worshippers [}:)][}:)][}:)] [Mildred excluded of course]

The one time I got to use my GTech meter for a drag which I did on the side of the road it recorded my 1/8 at 9.9sec. The road was too short & too public to do a 1/4 mile run but if I extrapolite the graph I might've broken 15 secs but it is amazing how long a second is when it comes to going faster.

Nice times! 13.84 is very respectable!

How did that DSM (Talon) in the background do?

I am racing my friend's Talon (similar to Eclipse) on Friday. Last fall I ran 9.91 @145 with that car [8D].

The Talon did a 13.40 @ 109 mph. Looked to be mostly stock and well used. I though I had him at the start but the turbo must have kicked in on top end.[:0]

That must have been a FWD Talon. AWD Talons (like the one I race), run mid to low 12's with 109mph trap speed [;)]

BTW, I just ran 10.01 @145mph on my friend's Talon [8D].

I can't wait to get my TR7 to the track!!! [:(]

Great time! Bet that plants you back in the seat!!! I take it there must be a big difference in the engines besides being AWD?
