Aley Roll Bar - Wind Deflector

Postby DJV » 18 Mar 2009 22:02

With the outbreak of the rarely sighted BIG yellow thing in the sky, took the wife out in the TR today but she was not impressd with the level of wind buffeting from the back of the headrests, could a wind deflector be the answer .............but my concern relates to whether it is possible for both items to be fitted.

Anyone tried this??

appreciate thoughts on this one

I have one.It fits on brackets attached to the seat belt housings,so
i dont think it will fit with a roll bar.I know it will not fit on my
4.6 without cutting it down.I might be tempted to sell mine as i never
use it anyway!

See ya. Paul

i suppose you could have one custom made in clear acrilic or if your handy with a jigsaw make one your self to fasten to roll bar fastened with velcro or something,
something i have been thinking about also....

It rides again.....

No fighting guys! I will dig it out in the morning and take some pics.
to show how it fits. There is a photo of one in the rimmer cat.p.188,but
pay no attention to how its located as they simply wedged(pun)it behind
the head rests for the shot. This is because the hood bag needs a slot
cut into it to fit the deflector with it in place.I never cut mine, just
never fitted the bag the few times i used it.Oh yeah,it comes with its
own storage bag so's it dont get scratched in the garage, which is where
mine has spent most of its life!

See ya. Paul

He could probably make a custom one for you. They are available through Moss also.

I have a freind in the TR Register who makes these wind break things, I know he has made a few for DH wedges with roll bars and without.
Cheers

John, as an alternative you could look at the BMW Z3 deflector.

I had one fitted to my DHC, although I did not have a roll bar as well. The Z3 unit needs a modification to the mounting brackets to make it sit upright in the car, but as the brackets are fixed to the rear bulkhead (screws through the trim panel) you have a certain degree of flexibility over the exact positioning which should allow the deflector to sit in front of the roll bar or lower down to sit under the roll bar. The deflector can also be set at different angles from the vertical once installed.

The deflector is black mesh & looks so much better than the clear acrylic IMHO. I was pleased with the reduction in wind turbulence. Once installed it is very easy to remove if needed, just leaving the brackets in place, or it will fold flat onto the rear deck. Being BMW it comes with a decent storage bag & even bungs for the mounting brackets to stop water getting in when the deflector is not in place!

If you look at this you want the early version for Z3 WITHOUT the roll over hoops (pre 1999 I think). They are often on fleabay, under £100 should get you a new one.

Sorry but don't have my DHC any more (sob) so can't measure exactly for you, but I do have the cloth storage bag (forgot to give it to new owner) so I could measure that for you if any help!

Tony's idea seems ideal as you dont have to cut your hood bag.
Here are shots of the locating brackets of mine-

The dimensions of the deflecter are 83 cm long by 32 cm high, but add
another 6 cm to height for brackets(deflector sits 6 cm above rear deck.
I looked at my v8's rollbar,i think you could engineer bracket to fit
deflector infront of bar if you can be bothered!

See ya. Paul

I do have the "BMW" screen fitted to my car.
I can give you dimensions if you wish.
Image
I prefer the mesh type as having tried the perspex one the air cannot filter through it so it can buffet about. where as the mesh one can diffuse the air far better (in my opinion )
And the scrren does not have to be any taller as it's only restricting the air that is swirling back into the car from the windscreen.

That's exactly what I had in my DHC. Like Wedggie, I was pleased with the improvement it made.

Good picture too - I think you can see how the screen sits in relation to the rear deck so might well fit with a roll bar in place.
