Could we all please stop referring to this bunch as a "government"!!! It's an insult to the very word!

Whilst I can understand the French and the Germans introducing this incentive to buy new cars, I can't see it as a good idea for the UK as most of the cars we buy are made overseas and all the profits from the screwdriver operations (Honda at Swindon etc.) disappear that way as well.

if you look at the state of most cars in france it's a miracle they last 8 years, the offside of most of them are damaged where they hit parking bollards etc.[B)]
They do appreciate a classic car though and I suspect a proposal like this would meet with 'direct action' by a fair proportion of the population as the french dont take things they dont like 'lying down' as we tend to do sometimes.

Hi,
As some of you know i work as a Tech in a BMW Dealership and whilst new car sales are low, we are selling loads of secondhand cars most less than a year old so they would qualify for this sceme. In Japan dont they run a system where when a car reaches a certain age, for its 'MOT' it requires £1000's spending on it so it is scrapped [:0] a far worse system. My 'M' reg Cavalier would be long dead [xx(] I think the fact that classic car 'industry' employs many people in this country and a lot of rich and famous people own them, then as much as the bl88dy tree huggers would like to see the back of 'us' i cant see it happening just yet
Our cr4p excuse of a goverment are throwing money at anything at the moment, our money [:(!], and one day WE will have to pay it back [:(!] [V] [:(!]
Cheers John

Alec, we didnt vote for our current Prime minister, he was just given the job by his mate Tony Blair, hes trying to set a record as the worst PM ever. Problem is what alternative is there, the other 2 parties are probably as bad. Thats why I wont vote, waste of time, there all after my money.

Politics to my mind are not for this site. All parties are the same (liars) so lets just stick to TR7/8 problems.

Yes I agree but as you say it is a political point but I (personally) think it should be the item we discuss and not the political policy of any party (it is a european policy) I just hate political banter on a site (as we are all different and have differnet opinions and rightly so).

So sorry if you took my post the wrong way but yes discuss the point but do not get politcal.

Gareth fair point,i i didnt tke it the wrong way at all, but if others want to debate on it be it political or otherwise , then its fair game, and if others dont want to then fair enough, its the choice we share i quess!!

gareth, point well taken on politics but discussion is on a political agenda, alec, this proposal was discussed in practical classics a few months ago i believe and the fbhvc opinion is seeminly not of the opinion that a classic car should be an every day car anyway, they seem to favour the garaged cosseted classics that are trailered to shows and the stainless headers are not even blued as they not been run long enough to get hot,..... so they seem to be a bit on the fence over the issue, it is the main point that despite selling it as a green issue it is being introduced as a means to gee up the car industry, in which case they will need to give me a damn sight more than 2 grand as i just dont have another 8 to add to it to get a decent new car..... but may rent a field and buy a load of old bangers and keep for a year....lol

Something similar was proposed by a Democrat woman in California a few years ago to outlaw all cars over a certain age to keep polution down. Ignore the fact that the polution they cause is a negligable amount of total and would make no difference and that it would decimate a multi billion dollar industry. It faded away into nothing. Too bad. Would have meant a lot of cheap imports to Canada.[8D]

Actually, I think that there is some merit to laws that encourage getting older junk cars off of the road. The pollution caused by well-cared-for "classic" cars is negligible. The pollution caused by 15-year-old, poorly-maintained, commuter cars is not negligible.

The problems are a) crafting laws that get the junk off of the road b) one man's junk is another man's classic.

Actually, in the UK, 15 year old cars have to meet the same emission standards as new ones at the annual MOT. This standard is much higher than required for much older (carburetted) cars like the TR7 (thank goodness). My Saabs are 12 and 15 years old, have engine management systems which control everything so tightly that most would meet the standards without a cat fitted. It has been said that the exhaust from the rear is cleaner than the air taken in the front.
The scheme has been running in a form for a while now with £1000 being paid for old cars as long as they are roadworthy (MOT'd) and driveable. This is against the purchase of certain new cars (such as small diesel engined Vauxhall Corsa and Astra models). A certificate of destruction is provided for the old car.
However, in typical blinkered government fashion, this ignores the fact that destruction of the old car and manufacture of the new one gives far more carbon output than running the old one. Of course, it might generate some business to keep jobs in these tough times and with it some extra taxes (surprise!), but it is alledgedly all done in the cause of being green.
