I'd go for John215 and bmcecosse's advice and check all connections and earth points and clean them thoroughly. If the loom is really that bad/butchered try S&S or Robsport maybe they can supply you with a good second hand one. Renewing isn’t difficult, just a lot of work as the dash needs to come out ...
Hopefully you won’t get to many problems with the rest of the car. Make sure you service it properly and regularly, so as suggested down load a workshop manual or get your hands on a Haynes manual.
