The steering wheel is the 'original' 007 item: Both control knobs for the ejection seat are there,
within easy reach. But? - with a wife like yours that seat, and the controls that came with it,
can probably be tossed over board. You'll save a lot of weight...[:D]

Welcome to the V8 world. Much easier buying an 8 than converting, IMO.
Peter, how do you know that's a 650? Looks the same as my 390 from the photo. Couple tips on Holleys; The bowl gaskets tend to shrink/disintegrate if left sitting for long periods. If you get into it, buy the blue gaskets. They make removal much easier. The stock brown ones adhere themselves like glue and are a major PITA to clean off. The blue ones are supposedly reuseable for jet changes. You can also get a secondary conversion kit that repaces the fixed metering plate with a block alowing secondary jet tuning. The 390cfm is plenty big enough for my 3.9 and throttle responce is exellent. You can eliminate some of the mess by pulling the plug off the oil sender with the engine running. This will shut down the fuel pump and the engine will use up some of the fuel in the bowls before shutting off. Still be some in the bowls so have a rag underneath to soak up the spill. From the looks of the carb, it may be worthwhile to get a kit & do a cleanup/rebuild.

It's a little worn, but I have been looking around tonight and that green checked pattern is hard to come by. We'll see what happens.

Welcome to the V8 world - fun, aren't they?

I believe I still have a set of green tartan door panels in pretty good condition, if you need 'em down the road.

Thanks for all the good wishes!! Peter is right, it is a Holley 650. The end. There it is. That is the complete database on my knowledge of carbs (other than I do enjoy a good loaded baked potato). The only reason I know what kind it is is that the PO told me. It is also an Edelbrock manifold. After a night sitting in the garage, have a small spot of oil on the floor about as big around as a can of beer, just to the right and an inch or so back from the center point of the engine. Not alot, but I will investigate source further when time permits. Also had a decent gasoline aroma in the garage. Maybe the seals for the carb, but nothing visible in the little valleys today. Will have to look into this also. Will report back with a fresh pic this weekend if we have some sun and can get a good wash[8D].

Don't feel bad. Mine leaves it's mark and it's a brand new engine! I haven't got around to investigating but mine looks like either the frt seal or oil pan. Hard to see since I painted the engine black. The damper is the OE SD1 unit so maybe it has a wear groove where the seal rides. Sucks when you put one together new & it leaks just like the old one.[:(]

All carbs look the same to me too but ebay ad told me it was a 650. Here's some useful info...

http://www.nationaltbucketalliance.com/ ... carbs2.asp

"The easiest way to tell if you are over carbed is to sit idling, then floor your car. If you are over carbed, it will bog, and stay boged until the RPM rises enough to pull a good vacuum. The lower your VE is, the longer it will take to recover your manifold vacuum and perform properly. I do not recommend running a VE lower than 70%! Even at 70% your tuning will be very difficult."

Hey, you are a lucky guy. My wife let me buy my Eight, but I have to keep in in another state. Great color! And that V8 power is intoxicating.

Ahh...you cheated Peter[;)] Very useful info. Actually, when I embarked on building the 3.9/4.0, I was wondering if the 390 was too small. My friend, the ex drag racer and engine guru, had the same formula. He told me the 390 was plenty of carb and he was quite right. I think a lot of guys stick the 650s on because they can be had a LOT cheaper. Cheaper factor comes in because it's a very popular carb on a 350 Chevy and they sell a lot of them. That & the biger is better mentality. Most common mistakes in hot rodding from way back...too much carb and too big a cam. The 650 probably works half decent because of the vacuum secondaries. Not the optimum setup though IMO. I'm not just saying that cause I have a 390 either.[:D]

Did Einstein "cheat" when he gathered all the evidence together to arrive at the theory of relativity? I thunk not.

I noticed a slight hesitation from idle on my Edelbrock 500 while I was at the Taupo track last weekend. I think the higher altitude (400M) there might have accentuated the over-carbititudeness because it is usually fine at sea level. I think I will try disconnecting the secondaries in the interests of science.

My wife was a time-keeper for the day. I love her too.
