[:(!]After a wasted trip to see the blue convertible I am still on the lookout for 'my'car[V].The garage it was at told me they still had it however on arrival a slick salesman told me that "Those cars are just rubbish we sent it to auction as no one would buy it, why not slip your pretty little head into this mgf darling" I wanted to say WHY DON'T I SLIP MY PRETTY BOOTED FOOT INTO YOUR NUT'S!!" But kept my demure and told him that in fact the tr7 is a very cool car and the mgf is in fact rubbish no thanx![:X] The owner of the other possible white fhc car does not answer his e-mail or phone so I am still waiting to see that one.I am trying to bat my eyelids and look helpless to see if a guy friend will take me too robsport next week? They have a red convertible and a blue fhc for sale.fingers crossed.x

Robsport normaly has a good selection of cars and will not try and sell you a MGF (spent 6 years working on them and they are as bad you say IMHO) The FHC looks nice.

My dad and I used to have interests in the motor trade. The best advice I can give anyone buying a car is: Be patient, bide your time and the right car will come along. Remember it's a buyers market, so haggle a bit then go away, come back haggle a bit more etc. NEVER be in a hurry to buy in a buyers market. They will always try to sign you up today, because they know if you walk out that door you might never came back! Believe me heading for the door is a great negotiating tool when dealing with car salesmen!
Beware of the double sell, this sales technique is where the salesman and the manager team up and play good cop bad cop. The salesman is really a good bloke 'cause his really trying to get you a better deal but the manager wont be in it. The idea is your meant to feel sorry for the salesman who's tried sooooo hard to help you so you end up buying the car at top price!
There is another stunt they pull called a carnival here in Oz. This can happen when a dealer has more than one car yard, the idea is it stops you from walking out the door. What they do is tell you the have a much better car of the type your after at one of the other yards and they will drive you there while the valuation of your car is being done at the yard your presently at. So now they have you as a captive audience and will drag you from one yard to another until you break and buy a car. It has been known for them to try and tell the more gullible that their car isn't at the yard they started at because the mechanic took it to check something for the valuation so theres no point going back until the valuation is done so why not spend the time looking at another car! If they want to show you a car at another yard go there in your car, the salesman take s his and you can leave whenever you want!

I have been hitting the 'net and mag's for a while now and have never come across country classics before.Bad news for thier PR dept' but good news for me as no else will know what they have for sale[;)].Thanx for the link.Also Ta for the inside track on car dealers I think they are in top 3 of most hated people with lawers and estate agents.[:D]............the search continues.

<font face="Comic Sans MS"><font size="2">Not all of the blokes in the trade are shonks I know a few that are honourable but there are plenty of scumbags out there so to be fore warned is to be fore armed.
When you walk in to the car yard and a salesman pounces from nowhere and starts the hard sell, that's called frontlining here in OZ. Just tell him your fine and you'll ask if you want to know something. It gives you time to look at the cars on offer without distraction. They'll try to draw your attention away from any known faults.
If and when your ready to find out more ask a different member of the sales staff and tell them you didn't appreciate the first guy pouncing on you as soon as you walked in.
It puts them all off balance.
If something doesn't feel right or you feel uncomfortable with the salesman just walk away or ask if you can deal with another salesman.</font id="size2"></font id="Comic Sans MS">

Country Classics are i think one poss two man band who have other jobs and are classic car enthuasts. They sell cars as a hobby rather than a buisness. There was no hard sale when i brought mine from there cup of tea and a chat, had a good look around it, jacked it up ect road tested it on my own, no pressure ect.
Would meet you over Bobsport but for 2 reasons-
#1 Rob or Simon wouldnt sell you a bad car, well not without you being made fully aware of it [;)] so you know any faults on it.
#2 Every time i go over there i always end up buying more than i went over there for!!
Once again a couple of nice guys and not high pressure'got to make a sale' types!! Would be just as happy talking Triumphs over a pint as selling them [;)] What they or the lads in the workshop dont know about our cars is'nt worth knowing!
Also Stoneleigh is coming up beging of March, cars for sale there as well, if you have one by then chance to drive it up there and buy anything you need for it.

In reading this, I find it somewhat amazing that sales tactics are so similar all over the planet! One of the ploys here is they don't like to discuss the actual price. They instead try to sell on the payment amount. People actually buy vehicles because they can afford the payment without regaurd to what they are actually paying for it. I had the salesman/manager thing happen to myself. Salesman walked off saying he had something to attend to (which appeared to be reading the sports page) and a younger manager came at me. First question was "what sort of payment are you comfortable with?" I told him it that none of his bussiness and I wanted the price of the car upfront. They HATE that!

BTW, may partly explain why the credit industry is in such a shambles here. Selling things for inflated prices that will never be recovered if the loan defaults. I digress.[:I]

Keep looking Steph, glad to hear my info was helpful.

I went to see countless cars when I bought my first one and came away with all sorts of stories. I literally travelled the length of the country to find it. I met all sorts that told me classics like "just becuase it doesnt show on the dipstick doesnt mean it hasnt got oil in it" - shortly before the car caught fire!

and on discovering one was running on 3 due to a blown headgasket "I can assure you it was fine this morning, I think it will be a hole in the exhaust thats all"

Hi Steph, good on you for holding back what you really felt like saying, i know if it had been me, i wouldnt have been so polite to that salesman, trust me Steph these cars will be around a hell of alot longer than the ones he is trying to flog at his showroom, they are classic cars in every right even if some quaters still dont see it yet. Hi, if I am doing a quick search lookiing at TR's for sale, just passing time mind [;)] , I always have a look at Country Classics, be aware they have had all those TR7's in for sale for a ver long time, certainly 18 months, as previously stated they are more enthusiasts than salesmen, I almost bought the Java one myself only the distance from home stopped me, I still keep looking at the blue one as a project car [:p]

If you do go to Country Classics and you look at the maroon v8 check the nearside front floor and the boot floor as we checked it out 18 months ago and there was considerable rust problems there,enginewise perfect.[:D]

Once again the amount of 'real' honest advice from all of you is so kind thankyou all[:X].A forum for my last classic car (not Triumph) was not half as friendly with regular stupid rows and people filling up pages with spam and insults.Anyway now I feel at home here is my update[:)].For those of you following my search I have yet to actualy see a car in the flesh.I have finaly got a reply about the white fhc and I have passed on the questions raised here about the trim,wheels and the missing engine part(blonde moment the thing that stops fumes entering the car is missing someone said?) Well I am back to waiting on his reply.I have asked to see the silver car at halesowen and he has not replied.The red convertible at robsport is on e-bay and the blue fhc while nice needs rear arch work.So I am still wedgeless[V] .The march show sounds a good prospect in the meantime country classics may be my next option.I will look out for the maroon car, btw I have the 'lets sell 'em a dog' trouble times two as being a woman I know nothing about cars of course apart from the lipstick holder[}:)].I think dear ole dad will have to be dragged along.Dads are the only man you can trust 100%[:D]

Excuse me, dearie. A bit of advice, if you don't mind.

The presence of estrogen or testosterone is not a factor in acquiring knowledge about a TR7. It's engine runs and the gearbox shifts the same regardless of what is between ones legs. This forum exists to aid ALL who thirst for information on this car. If at first one does not know about, say the waterpump, or the ignition system, or the carburetors, please ask. Or, better yet, research in these assembled threads for the topic you seek.

None of us here were born with anything in our heads, it was all learned, one fact at a time. Please, read and learn from the many posts here and elsewhere, then go forth with an open mind on your quest for the car you seek. But, know in your head and heart, even the best car out there will need your personal and constant tinkering to keep it in fettle. In fact, using the car as a transportation tool rather than a occasional weekend toy is actually better for it.

The TR7 can be a very good car, it's all up to you. Here in the machine shed, the Great Truth is that Mr Good Wrench is you, with greasy hands, aching lower back, and the skinned knuckles under there bleeding the clutch slave cylinder shouting at Caleb to, 'Pump three times and hold!'
