Replacing the Windscreen Wiper Arms

Postby PeterTR7V8 » 29 Oct 2008 21:06

My car goes in for its long awaited respray next week and I will need to attend to the various trim. The wipers in particular are looking very sad.

I'm not a big fan of the rattley arms that are on the car now so rather than paint them I'm thinking of replacing them. Has anyone put non-triumph wiper arms on that they can recommend?

Peter, powder coating is very durable and is available in many colors that could include the windshield lower fairing and would look very good for a long time. $0.02 worth.

Depends on how original you want to keep the look of the car, ive seen a few TR's with their wiper arms powder coated and they look great, i probably do the same when i come to having my 7 resprayed but for now i stiped the paint off, bit of primer and a few light coats of satin black, hs done the trick for a good stop gap, but like anything like these its just self preference.

I sanded my wiper arms, removed all paint from lower fairing with aircraft paint striper which revealed more rust than before the paint was striped. I got that bit of rust off with Metalready then painted with "trim paint" specifically designed for wipers and chrome/brightwork that has black paint on it. Cheap way to do it and it looks like new. Never thought of powder coating but that would definately improve durability but at higher cost.

Thanks people but even good looking TR7 wipers aren't very effective in my experience. I was hoping there was a modern conversion out there.

Can't help with the conversion but I know what you are talking about. Mine chatter also. I'm thinking it has more to do with the drive mechanism than the actual arms. Combined slop in the cable & wheel boxes. Perhaps someone has a remedy for the stock setup?

I don't have chatter on my TR7, they work fine. I have pulled the cable, cleaned it and the tube and regreased with clear synthetic grease. I also use Trico windshield wipers. Don't know about the 7 but my Tercel is known to chatter the wipers unless a high quality wiper like Trico (or Toyota OEM wipers are used.) I have tried a number of different brands from Canadian Tire on it (the Toyota) with less than satisfactory results including Teflon coated wipers.
