Getting original registration number back

I have read one of Chris Turner's posts saying he is trying to get the original registration number back for one of his cars. My car had a different number plate when new, then had a private plate, then the current number. Is it possible, if it is available to get the original number back?

And of course, how do you do it and is it expensive?

Simon, usually if a private plate is taken off a car the original is put back on. The problem is sometimes the original plate is no longer available so another age related plate is put on the car. If the original plate becomes available the DVLA will let you have it back if you can prove your car did carry the plate originally. It is easier if the car is of historic value which applies to TR7/8s.

Don't understand why the original plates weren't re-applied to the car on removal of the personal plate. Are you SURE it's the correct car for the paperwork ?

I got my file out with all the car documents in and the original bill of sale and several early invoices state the registration number as STO 879R.

Later invoices and MOT certificates say XGR 9 is the registration mark.

The car was taken off the road aound 1987, the car had an MOT when i bought it in November 2006 and the current number of TRR 676R. This is on the MOT and registration document.

Perhaps the previous owner - the car was in the same family from new (2 previous owners from new on registration document)so when they took car off road they took the XGR plate off and put it onto another car. Then when they re-commisioned the car in 2006 the latest number was provided. Only guessing.

Provided the chassis and engine numbers all tie up with the original paperwork, that must be the explanation!

Yes all the numbers tie up so it is ok.

I did some searching last night on the DVLA website and have downloaded the V765 form. I need to get the TR Drivers club to sign and stamp the form, I am guessing that will not be a problem. I am not sure if it will cost anything, i will try to find out today.

<font face="Comic Sans MS">I have done a private plate change a number of times and the original number was never re-allocated (although I never asked ) but my understanding is that the original number is voided for future use.
Things do change on this matter and the TR Register have a Lost Numbers guru who may be able to help </font id="Comic Sans MS">

We have personal registrations on all our vans and when we retain them for future use we always get the original number back. Simon I notice your current number includes all of the TR7 name so why not keep it.

I thought about the post the Ruddy made recently - in the glovebox and the subcequent posts. I just thought it might be nice to have the original number if it was available. I am a bit funny like that, i like things to be original if possible - but yes the current number is quite a good one.

When my cars are renewed - the private plate goes to the new one and the old one has always so far got it's original number back -I keep the reg plates and re-fit them in the Dealers yard!

Not so with older transfers, The DVLA just did not bother. The first time a car of mine got its original plate back was in 2001, I was so shocked I did some research on the matter at the time.

Different areas just had different practices, it was as simple as that.

Hi, this is my attempt to use the forum so apologies if it goes to a ball of chalk but here goes. On the subject of registration plates, does anybody know how to find out the chasis number if all you have is the number plate? I don't know where to start looking but would assume it is stamped on the vehicle somewhere. I bought the car from a scrapyard and it has no other documentation. Would the information be provided when I re-register the car with DVLA?

There should be a plate on the offside front suspension turret, also the chassis number is stamped onto the channel on the right hand side of the boot opening.

If its an older car aren't some of the "VIN" plates located on the nearside door?

And yes - if you get the V5 from DVLA it will have the car's details. BUT - snag is - they may ask you to verify these details to them before they will issue the document!
