UK VED TR7's and 8's ?

Postby macutmore » 10 Jul 2008 20:12

Out of interest I was trying to find out if TR7 drivers will be affected by Gordons little statement today on VED. I found a table, but couldn’t actually find out specifically what VED band classification the TR7 was actually in???? All I had was the price I paid this year for 12 months VED- £185

So what band is that I thought? I couldn’t seem to get the information anywhere or the actual CO2 (gm/m)output of the TR7 that’s supposed to put you in a specific band.
Then I found the answer on the AA site....

Cars registered before 1 March 2001

In many cases the emissions test data is simply not available for cars registered before March 2001, so, the rate of VED can't be linked to CO2 emissions. Yet, there are still discounts to be had for smaller cars. If the engine capacity is 1,549cc or less, you'll pay £120 (up £5 from the 2007/8 rate of £115) compared to £185 (up £5 from the 2007/8 rate of £180) per year if the engine's over 1,549cc.

The March 2008 budget report included the announcement that the rate for smaller engined cars will be frozen at £120 per year for 2009/10. The annual rate for cars registered before March 2001 and with an engine size larger than 1,549cc will increase to £200 for 2009/10.

So it would seem only a £15 increase next year. Proposals have been released for modern cars for 2010-11 but I presume pre 2001 cars remain the same rates?

It can be less of a shock when you're ready for an impact I guess!

Yes well it's just yet another tax grab by Gordon Clown - as if the huge cost of fuel isn't enough tax for him. Main reason he hits cars of course - he doesn't have a driving licence!!
He was the b@$!@rd who cut off the free road tax for cars over 25 years old, or by now all TR7s would be eligible - at least my Morris Traveller is still free road tax. Hence my TR7 will only be taxed for 3 months this year - June /July/August - the Traveller being used for April/ May and September/ October (I transfer the classic insurance between them) before they both hide away for winter!

i understood that the new taxes only affected cars built from 2001 onwards

Well - it is 'ok' - but still subject to a slight increase unless you fit an engine with less than 1549cc - which is an idea!! Has anyone fitted a smaller more economical engine to a TR7 ? A modern 1400 cc engine has about 75/80 bhp and would be fine for the use I put to my car.
