fitting a radio/cd player to my dhc 7

I am told modern radios do not fit the TR7 is this right or is there a way around this.

I dont need any thing special, but I do wanr the RDS feature and will use an MP3 player instead of cd auto changer.

Welcome the the best TR7/8 forum Pete.

This topic has been covered fairly recently. If you use the search facility it will help.

Modern units can and do fit in the TR7, I myself have a 6 stack cd player in the boot with a decent head unit up front complete with RDS etc.

Check out the search and see all the different permutations that members have achieved.

You can get a modern unit in there, but there are a couple of problem areas:

1 The slot is not very deep so it's very difficult to get the unit to mount flush. Most end up sticking out 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

2 Theres's little to fix the mounting cage to inside the slot. I ended up making up wooden wedges to support mine.

3 The unit sits a a fairly steep angle & I'v heard that some CD units don't like that much.

Could some of you who have upgraded the radio post what brand and model you found that would fit? I bought a cheap Phase Linear brand CD/Radio, but it sticks out about a half inch. I noticed Kenwood in the one post, and I have seen a Sony fit flush in a car for sale online, but I couldn't make out the model of either. Manufacturers don't list the depth on their units either. The opening is the standard DIN size, so depth is the only concern.

That is my Kenwood and it is an KRC-178R

Personally I would not go down the CD route

My reason for this is it jumps and skipped all the time (the one I fitted did)

I would rather have a cassette unit pop in a cassette adapter and plug that into a MP3

My car I plugged in to my iriver 40 gb mobile mp3 hard drive

More music than you can shake a stick at â€¦ [;)]

I know that all the V8 Drivers will say why bother with the radio in the car

As the engine noise is the music â€¦ [:D]

But I like my sounds in the car even if it did have a V8 â€¦ [8D]

If it's not broke don't fix it.

Yah..skip the CD. Get a radio with USB/MP3 plug or Aux plug in or you can get a unit like I did for $30 that gets power from cigarette lighter, provides power for laptop etc. plug in your MP3 player and broadcasts in FM to your FM receiver. Not as good as integrated unit but still...no skipping CD's.

You'll probably get a better sound if you use a cassette adapter instead of the FM transmitter. Mine was always loaded with static and hiss

I 100% agree with you I have a FM Transmitter and I do not like it I use the Cassette adapter

And the cable runs up the back and just pops out at the top of the radio

You can just see it if you look carefully at the top right hand side of the radio

Being somewhat older and not having an MP3 (I only listen to music in the car), I have fitted a standard (pretty cheap) Pioneer CD/radio unit. Only problem with making it fit right in was the amount of wiring behind, including the radio connector plug and lead. It does go in with a bit of fiddling. The CD plays fine. There is a slight problem in that, when the hood is down, it is impossible to read the radio LCD display but otherwise OK.

the display on the radio that came with my car (not connected BTW) has such a screwed up display, that it doesn't really matter.

So, what wire is the ignition hot wire in all that mass?

this winter I'm planning on making a fiberglass version of that console and moving the radio to the bottom. I saw an earlier post of someone rebuilding one to that effect, but it's easier for me just to mold the original and modify it from there.

Tim,

The original wire for the radio was the White/Pink wire.
Now, the Purple wire that goes to the Cigar Lighter is NOT switched and is ALWAYS hot, and it's right next to the radio.

Funny enough I am in the process of trying to sort out all the wires behind my dash so the radio unit can all go in. I have decided to trim down a few of the longer wires to give a little more room for the black plug that goes into the back of the unit.
I also have a few wires that have come out of their original connections so knowing what colour wires are what is great.
