BBC lost rally TR7 film

Postby Raider » 15 Jun 2008 07:30

In the latest Historic Rally Car Magazine Bill Price (former BL Comps manager) has made the following appeal.

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Century Gothic, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">In 1976 the BBC sent a film crew around with the Leyland Cars rally team following the fortunes of the TR7 in it's first season of rallying.

In about October 1976 it was shown on BBC TV, possibly in 2 parts.

BBC archives don't have a copy. Does anyone out there have a copy which they made at the time<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">

I have often thought about this film and would love a copy too but if Bill Price doesn't have one it seems unlikely. Plus how many home video recorders were there back in 1976.

Still, if someone has a copy please help out - contact me if you wish.

Although I was only 11 at the time I actually remember this as it was shown on Grandstand (cult viewing on a Saturday afternoon if not attending a Birmingham City home game). There was a massive hype and British hysteria about the whole TR7 thing at the time, anyone who loved cars, my Father and Brother included were very exited about the whole rally project and again the cynical British press were hoping it would fail.

It's almost comical how the BBC have lost so much stuff over the years or the film turns up in someones grandads potting shed, makes you wonder what goes on with our money.

To be fair, at the time video tape was relatively expensive, and it was the done thing to wipe and reuse it. It's only later on that the value of the material on the tapes was seen as more valuable than the tape.
