Possibly Buying a TR7

Postby jrcoolt » 22 Apr 2008 15:47

I might be buying a TR7. But before I just jump into buying it, I want to know what some of the owners say about the car. I dont know much about english made cars. I grew up in Michigan, which is Ford and Cevy country. I do know how to work on those, so I have general knowledge about car repair. Any suggestions or input is helpful. Here are the specs.

1977 Triumph TR7
164,000 miles
2.0 Liter 4cyl
Body and motor are in PERFECT condition

They are only asking $1000 for it, so thats why Im thinking about picking it up.

well cars are personal preferences so i would say take it for a test drive if it puts a smile on your face then buy it any doubts then don't

Just looking through this forum you will have all the help you'll ever need they are not hard cars to work on very easy in fact.

and if you want to modify it well the world is your oyster. thety are different fun but have suuffered a unwarrented maligned reputation. when they really were the shape of things to come.

i love both my cars ones a fixed head 2ltr one a highly modified drophead.

If you're looking for a trouble free car that you can hop in and drive at any time with no more maintenance than an oil change every 3,000 miles, then a TR7 is not the car for you.
If on the other hand you enjoy tinkering, tweaking, maintaining, adjusting, and fabricating, then a 7 might be exactly what you're looking for! These are great cars to own and loads of fun to drive, but they are all a few decades old and require a fair amount of attention to keep them running properly.

Yeah - try the car if possible, if you like the way it drives then $1,000 sounds a good price if the body & mechanicals are as perfect as you say. Check the electrics - can be a weak spot, make sure all elecrical stuff is working.

Most spares are still available, there are a few parts that are hard to find now but as long as the bodywork is good then you can readily get parts to fix any mechanical problems that may arise in future.

The cars are great fun, different from what you usually see on the road, nice highway drivers (if you have 5 speed), stick like on rails around corners. On a drive to Portland, OR a club member easily kept up with anothers E type Jag on twisty roads much to the laters raised eye brows and surprise. Fell back on the straight aways but caught up in the twisty bits so he's putting in a 265 HP Buick V6 to fix that. That being said it might not be your cup of tea so try as suggested.

Many problems are electrical (which is blamed on Lucas) but mostly is due to corroded connections of unsealed open to weather of 28+ years. Components such as starters, alternators can be easily updated to modern equivalents if you want.

Definitely a different experience to your Camaro (ho hum) or Mustang (zzzz).[:o)]
