.............................................................................................................

Hi Steve!

All help would be appreciated! Rightyo here we go.......

It's a 1979 2.0 8v hard top with 51600 genuine miles, It has had robsport uprated springs front and rear, Spax adjustable dampers on the rear and i'm not sure
Which dampers are on the front as they are concealed inside the strut. There is an anti dive kit fitted and it's had spacers fitted between the front subframe and body to induce negative camber to the front wheels. This mod is what i believe knackered the bearings so quickly. Nothing too drastic!

Here's the problem. I had North to south movement and accompaning clonk from the damper/strut when the wheel was rocked, as a quick fix i attempted to nip up the hub nuts (just slightly as i know the torque for this is incredibly low) i then found the nuts to be completly loose. i nipped them up and this eliminated some of the play but still left about 10mm movement. I changed the bearings and outer race which further eliminated another 5mm.

Now when i rock the wheel north to south i still get the clonk, this comes from the chrome shaft of the damper as it moves independantly from it's cylinder. I didn't think the damper was used as a support for the suspension, i thought it was purely an unstressed part, with the various bushes etc taking the weight. leading me to believe that the damper has been knackered by some other part of the suspension being worn/perished/loose. basically i dont want to change the damper until i know what caused the old one to fail.

The thing that has stumped me is that apart from the damper, nothing seems to be worn well enough to induce that kind of play. Is there an acceptable amount of play in a TR7s steering/suspension set up? i'd assume not as it goes against all my experience but you never know! could the bushes be worn without looking like they are?

Hope i haven't confused matters!

All the best and many thanks,

Rob Basaras.

PS i got plenty more probs with it but this will do for now!!!!!!!

Check the lock nut for the strut insert andthe upper suspension mount for tightness or wear to start with

Hi Steve,
If the play disappears when the brake is applied then its in the bearing, there should be a small amount of play in the wheel bearing but not 5mm! as tapered bearings fitted do not over tightened Sounds like either the insert is loose in the strut or has excesive play. I assume he has checked the anti-roll bar bush where it goes through the arm and the inner bush. Is the steering notchy to turn [?] indicating top strut mount problem.
Cheers John

steve, on a mcpherson strut the shock itself can wear and cause this problem although it is unusual, as suggested above, check that the lock nut is tight, if it is then the shock may well be at fault.

Yep, I had this: grab hold of the strut below the spring mount and rock it back and forth. The nut, holding the damper within the strut, is loose. The simple, but urgent, fix is to tighten it up in situ. Re-check after a week or so.
