Interior trim question

Postby Rblackadar » 19 Jan 2008 01:08

I have the shift gaiter assembly out and I noticed where the gaiter is stapled to the base that some of the original staples are missing and the gaiter looks sloppy and is loose on that side. So how do I staple it back on withou penetrating though the board and puncturing the vinyl on the top side that's visible? It seems the staples just bite the hard board and that's it. Any of you guys know how they do it?

Hi Rb, have you tryed using a clear all purpose glue and holding it in place with a cloths peg ontil dry? quite often for tiny jobs that cant be seen i do that with mine, what people cant see wont know and if it does the trick its worth it, just a suggestion.

The staples in mine were all rotted out - most of them fell apart when I tried to pluck them out.

I ended up pulling the upholstery off the hard board, and stapled the shifter boot back on with heavy staples. I thought about just gluing it back on, but the shifter pulls it pretty tight when going into 5th. I laid a piece of thin foam on the board to hide the staples and then reattached the upholstery strip.

I used clear permatex silicon adhesive on mine about a year ago with no problems since.
