TR7 Key Cutting

I have just purchased a TR7 DHC which has only one set of keys. I do, however, have the key numbers - is there any chance of getting additional keys to fit? Advice appreciated.

Your local locksmith may be able to look up the numbers in his code books to reproduce the keys. Failing that he can make copies of the keys that you have. Doing it by code does produce a more accurate key though.

Just go to your local locksmith, he should be able to make a copy using your existing key.
No need for an accurate copy as the lock will probably be worn a bit too.

Have just had same problem as you & with some difficulty managed to obtain some key blanks and had them cut in my local key cutting place (also a dry cleaners!) My sources for keys were (1) they are advertised on ebay by someone from Stevenage who provided me with one set and (2) the other I tracked down was key-men.com in the USA who also ship internationally. Both sets arrived OK even though the US firm mixed up my order with a guy in holland who was buying one for his TR6.

My local locksmiths had the blanks hanging on the wall. If this happens in little Ducan you shouldn't have any problem. More rare was the key to the '76 Spit. Went to locksmith in Vancouver and the owner (not the front end guy) said "Oh, Yah, Spitfire. You have to use this key blank and grind off then end a bit." Fit like a glove. He really knew his stuff.

I couldn't ever find balnk keys here in my home town.. Over the yars have noticed there always seem to be blank keys listed on ebay, tho, so I got a set off ebay..

Local locksmith was great - I told him only that it was from an 80's triumph - he placed the key in some device which gave a read-out telling him it was from a TR7 and hence which master blank to use - 2 perfectly fitting keys in less than 10 minutes!

I bought a couple of blanks from the guy in Stevenage who sells via Ebay. Took them to the local hardware store (as in real 1950's style hardware store) who cut keys. Don't imagine they have a locksmith on their staff but usually do a good job. They refused point blank to do the keys even though I had the blanks - "we don't do car keys any more, it's too much trouble!" So I took them round to the local shoe repair place who also cut keys who said they can be difficult to do, particularly because of the wear on the old key, but they would do them at my risk if I wanted. So I pass the keys over and they cut them for me. They then refused any payment "because we can't guarantee them." Took them home and they both worked perfectly. Guess who will get my key cutting work in future?

Incidentally, for the locksmith amongst us I don't think we have a locksmith in the town with a retail outlet. If we do I don't know where it is but it certainly isn't in the town centre otherwise I would probably use one in preference.

Well they worked for me Paul. What I bought was two of the ignition/door lock keys (one key does both on both of my 7's). Don't know if he also does the boot and glove box keys. I bought from him because he does the keys with the plastic British Leyland top on whereas both the keys I had for the cars were "copies" without this. As I said the key people weren't keen to cut them but their objections were not about the key blanks, more about the wear already present on the keys they had to copy.

I got two sets from the chap in Stevenage and had them cut to fit both the ignition and the other locks - some of which had been changed before I got the car. The keys for the other locks looked much to short after they had been cut, but worked fine & the only cost was a donation to charity!

I bought two blank keys via ebay, my locksmit cut them for free(service) perfectly.
The same key for boot/doors and ignition.
For the glovebox he copied the little key, now i have 3 sets.
