Style Line

Postby Rust Restorer » 17 Nov 2007 19:33

Spotted this on an urban exploration website, looks like MG Rover where to use the much maligned style line from the TR7, backwards!, on a MG Protype. Or did Harris Mann come out of retirement! Scroll down to nprototype car.

I wouldn't exactly describe it as a 'style line'. No wonder they went bust!

I would not say they went bust!, I would say they where stitched up by the cr-ppy government who would not back them, then greedy fat cats who sold the designs to the Chinese, thus making them un-sellable and who made sure they got their payout, and a lanky prat from top gear who just as MG Rover where getting their act together with some good UK built cars, ZR/ZT, etc made sure that he gave them a right slagging off, as he compares everything to a bl--dy Ferrari/BMW/Porsche, or Merc.

They were selling crappy overpriced cars (except the MGF) - they went bust. I quite agree though that the Managers should never have been able to free-load from the Company the way they did. And as for the Chinese promises of employment - more like Chinese whispers.
Have any new cars actually been assembled there ?

I used to be a great fan of the Rover - I learned to drive in a 105S, but I'm afraid the last of the line were very long in the tooth - if you compare them with the Ford/Opel/Honda etc cars they were competing with. No amount of Badge and Grille Engineering could hide what was underneath! The MGF came on in leaps and bounds when they finally ditched the ghastly air/water suspension and put it on proper coils. Sadly never sold in the USofA where it would have been a huge success.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the link, worked for BL ,Austin Rover, and MG for 17 years in there dealerships as a tech. Total shame what happened to them,Aero space off loaded them onto BMW (after the goverment had done the same),they would have faired better increasing there ties with Honda, BMW only was intrested in Land Rover for the E53, X5 ,and once they had that sold it onto asset strippers what was left.
Walked round Longbridge with a group of MGF owners (i was a dedicated MGF Tech) and watched them being built a great day out.
Cheers John.

I agree with TR7inc.I bought a new MGZT190 in 2002. I have since had a Mazda 6 and now a Nissan Navara, and the MG, in my opinion, was a nicer car to drive, with more soul and better handling than the Mazda and Nissan (though it`s not really fair to compare a Navara as it`s more of a truck).
The other important thing was when I got in it, I got a similar feeling to driving the TR7, one of being slightly smug, driving a British car that is far better than what people think it is (if you know what I mean).
I genuinely wish I hadn`t sold it.
