Rimmer Discs ID Discovered

Postby john 215 » 04 Nov 2007 09:42

Hi,
Noticed this on Fleabay,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TR7-TR8-Vented-br ... dZViewItem
I run this type on mine and at the time of fitting reconised the calipers as SD1 Vitesse but after 17 years of working on BL cars knew the disc were not.Now i appear to have the answer to what they come off.Did any of you Ladies and Gents know this? Probaly cheaper to buy as Toyota discs than from Rimmers if i have any future problems.
Cheers John

Thanks for posting that. I have that kit but haven't installed it yet. How do you find it to work? I have the stock LHD TR8 brake system at present. Was wondering if I need to change the bias to the rear brakes.

Hi Under Dog
A couple of pionters that may help (i wrote about it in my Blog).
You will have to remove the flange of the disc dust shield and reshape the outer flange if you want to retain it.
Make sure the brake pipe supplied is correct mine had the incorrect ends [:(!] not a problems as i have a flaring tool.
My wheels rubbed on the caliper so had to install 3mm (1/8 inch in real money! ) spacers.
Will up load a picture later.Car not on the road yet but with uprated servo and master cylinder gives a good pedal.
Hope this helps mate,
Cheers John.

I really think we should set up a wiki somewhere so that people can post dimensions on specific upgrades such as brakes, etc...

The Toyota rotors are probably quite obtainable here in oz, but let's face it, these 80's parts will disappear and we need models (such as Goggle docs spread-sheeting) that can reveal required specs for matching

{just forgive me - i am off the planet)

In my view, it is not as easy to explore and discover as a structured index designed around a set of wiki pages may present. Also, I often find the search times-out. (Snitz is built on ASP Classic and Access.) Further, my engineering training suggests a structured approach thta compliments my maintenance stance on the wedge: renew components based on functional contribution to sub-system performance...

but hey, I am quite mad

John, thanks for the insight. Mine also was supplied with an incorrect brake pipe. One appears to be correct but one isn't, go figure?? The retaining clips for the pads also look to need some grinding to fit. I have 14" Panasports. It will be disapointing if I need the spacers. I emailed Rimmer about the fitment issues and thier responce was, it's a kit and some modifications may be required. Given the price, I expected it to be a bolt on affair. It doesn't seem they spent much time working out the details. Does anyone know the application for the pads? I'd like to upgrade to EBCs and should be able to order them from a suppier over here if I knew what to order them for. I'm glad to learn about the rotors. If not too pricey, I think I may get another set from my local parts supplier to have on hand should I ever need them.

. Hi John as far as I know has Toyota 5 x 114,3 PCD (4,5") .. but the ebay Adapter has only 4 holes so ??

Ford Capri has 4 x 108mm if you already have the Adapter it is easy ..Measure the diagonal of the fixing holes .. Toyota has 114.3 mm (4.5") Ford has 4 x 108mm
(4,25")

Hello from Switzerland

Hi Underdog,
I forgot to mention you do indeed need to grind down the edges of the clips, once fitted the caliper is higher than the hub/wheel mount (i hope you can picture what i mean will try to get a picture tommorrow) face and very close and the wheels i am running (Avez type A) have a wide mounting face hence the clearance problems. To add insult to injury Rimmers dont do wheel spacers or should i say shims as only 3mm thick req [V]
The pads i am sure are late SD1 Vittsse.
To be honest disappionted by the ease or lack of it should i say of fitting.
Anyone else had any problems with this kit[?]
Cheers John.

Mr John 215,
Your good you are.
I have one of these No.3 kits. I tried the SD1 calipers, but they were not much better with the standard pads fitted. So i put the Princess calipers back on with Ferodo DS2000 pads, but left the discs on from the No.3 kit, which are now warped. mmmm wonder why?
So now i can go to a Motor Factors and get standard Toyota discs, or get grooved discs to stop the pads glazing, which is more the case with the DS2000 pads than the EBC RedStuff pads.
Oh yeah, the pad clips don't fit, you have to cut, or grind them, but at least they (Rimmers) changed the caliper that was leaking like yours. And kit No.2 discs are 240mm diameter and kit No. 3 discs are 250mm diameter.

Nice one
Phil

Sorry to sound thick but what is a wiki?
I have princess four pot calipers with rossini drilled and grooved discs on my v8 and the combination works well.

Upseting to hear of problems with the calipers leaking. I bought this kit several years ago so returning won't be an option. The calipers appear to have spacers installed between the halfs in order to accomadate the thicker rotor. Is that where the leak was? In hindsight, I wish I had gone with one of the upgrades available over here. TSI & Woody Cooper both offer kits. I think Woody gets his from Wilwood. Oh well, maybe this will work out. Big chunk of money to have sitting on the shelf.

I think the leaks could be easily rectified with new rubber "O" rings, or slightly thicker ones from a universal kit.
The calipers halfs are bolted together, so would be do able.

Cheers

Hi
I may well have to go down that route noticed at weekend poss slightly damp around O/S caliper jiont again [:(!] may be residue (yeah right!!) Now out of warranty and caliper was changed under warranty and as any warranty auditor will tell you in the motor trade 'no warranty on warranty' [V]
Cheers John.

Thanks Phil, Guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I did check at the autoparts store and the Toyota rotors are available at 36 dollars each. They show them as 82-85 and are 4 X 100mm bolt pattern.
