Body Work

Postby dave.c » 23 Oct 2007 21:03

Hi All
Have had my car for about 2 years now enjoyed driving it but now need to tidy it up a bit
Ive noticed two splits on both rear wings developing near the sills and was hoping for advice on the best way to deal with them
can they be patched with filler or something somehow or is welding needed?

Thanks in advance ATB Dave

I'm not getting your pics but if the metal is cracked, it should be welded before filling.

I too cant see your pics but it sounds like it may be where the rear wings join the cills which is normally a visible seam on the car which is well known for rusting. If it looks like a crack it may have ben filled over in the past and painted but this always comes back as a crack. The only way to stop this crack returning is to weld this seam and then paint it. Once welded and properly treated it will last forever.

If it doesn't fit you obviously need a bigger hammer.

Ah, the dreaded bodywork. As our cars are used and age, some minor repair work will eventually be necessary. I had the same situation
twenty (or was it THIRTY) years ago when I bought my first Spitfire.
Back then there were a few professionals who could do that kind of work, and do it well and at a reasonable price. Not so much today.
In the years since then I have bought tools, air compressors, paint guns, mig welders on and on as the need arose. Then classes at the tech-school and practice in my own garage. I'm not very fast, but I think I do as good or better than some high cost production shop. I
guess my point is that I belong to some car clubs, and there is usually another member who has the skills to help, or who has at least attempted a project. We trade and we help each other, and we learn how to do things. This is probably the perfect situation of give and take, and have some fun at the same time. This forum is also good for the same reasons, although the hands-on approach might be a little difficult over thousands of miles.
