Wiper Woes

Postby penlost » 16 Jan 2016 15:17

Hello everybody , I need a bit of help! I have two problems, sometimes my wipers get stuck and I have to manually push them back down to make them spring back into life ! Where do I start?

Second. The water jets do not work. The motor was completely dead so I ordered and fitted a new one. Now it makes all the right noises but still no water. The nozzles look fine. What do I check next ?

Make sure the wiper parking switch is clean and properly adjusted. For the jets, make sure the lines/jets are clear (blow in them to see if water comes out?) I put new lines in because the old ones were yellow with age. you should be able to get the various size lines from pet store that cares aquarium supplies or they are available from suppliers. I think the motor depends on the way the wires are on it but I might be confusing it with a Celica I had worked on around the same time. Make sure the mesh on the line that goes into reservoir is clear. Mine had a clear/bluish jell in it from congealed fluid.

For the wipers, check the connections and earthing, they need decent connections to get the power/voltage.

For the washers, have you cleaned the footvalve in the reservoir? Also blow through the pipes to the jets to make sure they are clear. I used to have problems when I put the car back on the road in the spring as the washer fluid was little used and turned to jelly over the winter. I now leave it with plain water (freezing risk) or empty and just fill it for the summer on the road.

The motor can run and make the right sound but not pump any water, so check that water is actually coming out of the pump. I had a couple fail including one that was less then two years old

Assuming water is coming out of the pump and the tubes are connected all the way up to the jets that fire onto the windscreen, check the jets are not blocked up. I've had to clear mine on numerous occasions having successfully blocked them up with polish whilst making the car look nice and shiny. A needle is how I clear the solid polish out of the jets.

The tube going to the washer fittings on my 7 continually shakes down into the edge of the space between the bonnet & the reinforcing under it, where it becomes squashed. The flow from the washers will diminish, or completely stop, if I haven't used them for a while.

This is usual, as I avoid taking the thing out if it is likely to rain.

That all sounds familiar. I had to disconnect the pipes at each end and blow through to get the 'thick' water out, and that was with a new pump. Has all worked OK since though. Let me know how you solve the parking issues.

Thank you all. I have finally solved the washer jet problem! I went through all the steps suggested here and still nothing so I removed the pump again and took a closer look. I noticed that the 'In / Out' signs were the other way round to the old pump and as a long shot, swapped the tubes around and it worked! Seems the new pump has incorrect signs and the in/out as been reversed.

So I now have jets that work. Now on to the wiper motor and check earth etc.

Its fun when you finally solve it !
