Fitting Front Fog Lights

Postby bonnietiler » 11 Aug 2015 10:37

Now then...My Son having enjoyed the early part of the Summer in my Tr7 V8 has bought a Tr7 of his very own, nice that someone under pensionable age takes an interest! He has a 4 owner from new but the first owner had the car from 1980 until 2007 it has a genuine 50k on it and the decent chap even "Cadulac" a version on zeibart I think treated at new, the car is virtually rust free amazing, the stop between reverse and first isn't all it could be (5 speed) but all in all a really nice, it's a sort of light metallic blue it is, I'll get a picture posted anyway, he also likes the look of my genuine Lucas fog/spot lights and fancies a pair, tell me is all the wiring likely to be there or are we going to have to create a bit of a loom. I know it was a common accessory and I wondered if Triumph/BL would have just used one loom with all the appropriate wiring to make it simple if the fog lights were specified?
Many thanks

The wiring should be there. The correct brackets and now hard to find!
No doubt someone will be along to confirm the colour of the wires - mine have 35-years worth of road dirt on them!

I put a couple of Hella Comet lamps on mine which are very similar to the usual Lucas Square 8 and I had in stock from a previous modern car. They are also about half the price of the Lucas. They are modern lamps with a very good light output. Because brackets are hard to find I found it was easy enough to mount them directly into that triangular webbed corner at the front of the chassis rail.
Note that mine are driving lamps that I have wired in via a switched relay off the main beam circuit to give better lighting but also flash immediately from the stalk without waiting for the pods to raise. Personally I think driving lamps are much more useful than fog lamps.

Although the wiring for the front fogs is in situ B.L. et al were quite specific that a relay would need to be fitted. It seems this was not included in the circuit, unless presumably front fog lights were fitted on delivery. In the U.K. I understand that the regulations at that time did not permit the mounting of driving lights under the bumper but I believe current regulations do. It is thus possible to mount both fog lamps and driving lamps under the bumper. Rectangular fogs on the outside and round driving lights on the inside can look quite attractive and reasonably period if you choose your sizes carefully. supercass

My car came fitted with fog lamps and neither my son nor I could work out how they worked so I removed them.It was only recently that I found out that the rear fog switch worked them.Probably just as well that they were not used as there is no relays fitted.Steve...

The wiring should be there on both sides - I think yellow with red wires? Switches are combined I think (late Solihull cars?) but the early ones need a switch which just plugs into the wiring loom behind the switch panel.

For the brackets, you can get hold of these for a FHC - TSi do some natty stainless ones and TD Fitchetts have some too. There are two types, the DHC ones are slightly different due to the harmonic balancer, but the others bolt between the lower bumper and chassis rails.

Put PIAA fog lights (LP530's I think) on mine, spaced off the mounting brackets with half a roll bar spacer block. When researching them I think some of the Bosch ones fit and possibly the smaller Cibie ones?
