Electronic ignition question

Electronic ignition question

I have a dodgy connection on my lumenition optronic pick up in the distributor so have just googled for a price and they are about £85 for the pick up alone!

It seems that I can get new electronic kits for less than that, does anyone have any recommendations or should I just bite the bullet and get the optronic pick up?

I fitted the Pertronix/Aldon Ignitor MR-LS2 kit a few years ago (full kit was about £70 from Retrorockets, its a US site but they have a UK warehouse they ship from, much cheaper than UK suppliers, even better now with the exchange rate. http://vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/triumph.htm ). It took about an hour to fit and I have never touched it since. No boxes to fit, just a bit of wiring and change the points for the ignitor sensor. I note they now do an Ignitor II but I don't know the difference, seems to be for racing.

I have had a Google and have seen Accuspark units for about £39 but I have no idea of they are any good. I thought for the money they might be worth trying. Anyone got them fitted?

My son fitted one to his Viva some years ago and it was fine. I think the only problem with the TR7 Delco distributor is that you have to remove and take it apart to fit the Accuspark as, IIRC, it has a trigger ring which fits over the cam and the advance weights cannot be removed. I think someone here has fitted it, try a search.

Thanks Alan I will do that. Wouldn't any electronic ignition involve stripping down the Delco distributor to fit the pick up?

The Ignitor just replaces the points and condenser. It is fitted without removing the dizzy or advance weights. No more difficult than fitting and adjusting new points, just that you only have to do it once. The unit picks up from the cam lobes without a trigger ring.

Note I kept the old wire to the points in case it did not work and I had to change back to points quickly - proved unnecessary as it has never failed.

I'm a relatively unskilled new TR7 owner (81 DHC in carnelian red) and I'm looking to make it easy to live with so have ordered a spin on oil filter attachment and am now investigating electronic ignition. I'm guessing there are as many views on the best to adopt as there are systems available but have been interested in the Aldon as they're available from not too far from where I live. Your picture is really helpful in explaining how it fits but I've seen a lot of stuff on blogs etc about the ballast resistor and I'm not clear whether it's needed after fitting the Aldon or if it is how it gets incorporated into the system. Is it needed and if so is it easy to deal with? And do I need a new coil if I do away with the ballast resistor? Any help appreciated.

I did not change any of the ignition wiring apart from following the wiring diagram with the Ignitor. As far as I can recall this needed a direct feed from the ignition switched supply to the Ignitor and connecting the coil LT connection which went to the points to the other Ignitor connection. I did not remove the ballast connection to the coil. It obviously comes with instructions which are not too bad to follow.

I have rimmers Limenation MTK007 (love that part number.) Still in the box as I am a fair piece from completion. Price was 91.63. The currently have a 15% sale going.

That is really useful Alan thanks, I will look at getting the Ignitor then, the other advantage is that I get rid of the external Lumenition box.

I fitted an AAccuspark unit as you can see in my blog,some rewiring to supply 12 volts to the trigger remove disassemble reassemble and refit the distributor reset timing and has been no problems and seemed to improve performance.Would I fit another,probably not due to the distributor and its type and location nothing to do with the units performance.Steve..
