LSD Advice

Postby Stevie P » 17 Jun 2015 09:15

Hi guys

I have acquired a back axle with a new LSD in it, plate type, do you think it will be noisy in the FHC, should I sell it to a rally boy and get a Quaiffe ATB?

Thoughts?

In my (limited) experience noise shouldn't be a problem, I have a plate type in my Westfield and have never noticed any sounds from the diff, although the car is fairly loud what with wind plus mechanical noise. On the other hand I had a Twin-cam Escort Rally car many years ago with a plate diff and that did growl and chatter under hard cornering, but that was in the late 70's and I assume the technology has moved on since then?

I have a Quaife ATB in my current TR7 project but currently do not have more than a few miles on it so not really in a position to comment on it just yet.

In your shoes I would probably just try it in the car, the pro's and con's between the two are well documented elsewhere and in a TR the mileage is unlikely to cause the plate type to wear out in your lifetime!

I have run plate type LSD's in several rally cars and they can be quite noisy when they get hot. Reversing into a parking space in service was often accompanied by loud "cracking" noises. This was after some hard use on special stages. Never heard a thing when they were cold.

(The noise thing was a bit embarrassing in my Group N Corolla GT Coupe because the standard LSD in those cars which we should have been using was a different type and didn't make noises, but it was too "loose" for competition. Luckily no one who knew any better heard it or bothered to complain)
