Fresh air plenum

Okay, for the second time, I have fitted my FAP and it has left me with a jammed bonnet. This time I took off the rubber seals where it meets the bulkhead at the top so it would sit lower, and still it jammed shut, so I have removed the rubber seal around the top between the fixing points so that I could "break in".
I am currently cleaning up the lock mechanism on the bonnet where the spring is under no tension at all, which I believe is preventing the bonnet from releasing itself from the latch.
I have also adjusted it so it is looser on the latch but added a washer to give the spring more tension.
Am I barking up the wrong tree here?

The plenum can be one of the Great Mysteries of the Cosmos, no matter how many times in a day it comes off then back on.

Once it has been inserted past the cables and generally into place, the lower seal must be firmly fitted into the slots. This, of course, is a Braille technique. If the plenum is outside of the slots, it will flap about. If the plenum is on top of the slots, it'll be too high. Think of Goldilocks and the three bears; too hot, too cold, just right.

Please tell me you didn't bend the slots where it can't go in.

Now, get out there and try it again.

Have to agree with Mildred. Always seems to try not to go in the bottom brackets or catches on the dizzy/HT leads, or the bonnet release does not run through properly. It takes a bit of fiddling and woggling around to get it to sit right so the clips on the top also fit.

Maybe you're trapping the bonnet release cable when you fit the plenum. Try making sure it functions properly before shutting the bonnet down. You can also lengthen the pin on the bonnet to stop it holding so tight.

As mentioned care must be taken fitting the plenum on the lower catches. The spring/post height on the bonnet is adjustable. When I replaced the rubber on the windscreen/firewall base it stood a little proud. The latch barely released. I adjusted the post so the bonnet was a little higher. It sits a little higher now but releases fine. The rubber has not yet compressed so I can lower it after 8 years.

Well, full marks to Andy, turns out the issue is the cable which is frankly knackered, chewed up and frayed. So the plan is to buy a new cable, drill a hole in the fresh air plenum, feed the cable through a rubber grommet and attach it to the latch under veryittle stress at all.
Only got locked out of the bonnet three times which exponentIally relates to thousands of expletives. #128515;

Bear in mind if you feed it through a hole in the plenum you'll have to disconnect the cable whenever you need to remove the plenum. Maybe a slot in the edge would be better?

My plenum..and I think most have a empty area that the cable goes thru and then is sealed with the foam

Cheers Andy, to be honest, once it's on, I never want to remove the damn thing!!!!! Strangely, it doesn't take up too much room over the V8 so it may not be an issue.
It looks like removing and fitting the cable to the catch is not a biggie unless you know something I don't, like the catch self destructs or something.

Nice to round off the topic, I fitted a new bonnet release cable today and didn't need to drill holes in the fresh air plenum.
it's smooth in its operation albeit a tad noisy(easily cured) but the bonnet no longer jams and the old one that came off is trash.
Fresh air all the way to Spa in May now, no more headaches.[:p]
