Front Shock Locking Cup

Postby Orange Rag » 09 Feb 2009 03:35

Ok I'm new to the forum but it seems like the place to get the right answer to this problem.
I'm putting new KYB shocks on the front of a late 76 (5 speed) and the locking cap which should hold the shock from turning when you tighten down the nut is not locking and is allowing the shock to turn as I tighten the nut.
Is it common to change these lock cups when you change shocks?

Welcome to the forum. Funny things happen on the way here all the time.

The cap was not designed to stop it from turning. It does have notches in it that you can jam a big screwdriver in & hold it against 1 of the 3 bolts that secure it to the strut tower while you apply a socket to the centre bolt. There is probably a special tool that does the same thing somewhere.

The cartridge retaining nut holds the insert (cartridge) in the lower strut housing. This is followed by the bellows and the bumper stops.

This is followed by the compressed spring and the top housing.

Next, I use a pair of vice grips right at the top of the strut rod, below the upper housing to hold the rod as I install the top locking nut to the rod.

So I thought the flat spot on the cap and the flat side of the shock work together to stop the shock from turning. So I believe you are saying this is for removal only? And the vice grips are used in assembly?

Sorry, I thought you meant the cap at the top of the strut. [:I]

Hi Orange,

You are correct the two flat spots should mate up, ie on the shocker and on the cup washer, the two cut outs are there to allow you to stop the whole thing turning whilst you are doing it up or taking it off again.
The cup washers do get worn in time and it is a worthwhile thing to make sure they are in good condition.

Very timely information. My setp-son and I took apart the front suspension this weekend and I was wondering how to keep the shock's rod from turning while tightening. Now I know - the cup washer.

I have found that that doesn't always work if the washer is in bad shape.
