How to remove door rain gutter from FHC

Postby Mowog73 » 01 Sep 2008 11:37

So how does the black metal rain gutter at the top of the door opening come off?

My son and I are sanding down the body and this is one of the last pieces to remove in order to sand and paint in behind the rain gutter.

If you have a pair of channel pliers, put some duck tape on the teeth area. Then start at the rear most end. Gentlely pry from the bottom upwards towards the roof. This should pop the bottom flange off the rail. Once that is off you can take a small screwdriver and work it under the rail toward the front of the door.

Be careful in doing this as these have a tendence to kink if to much force is used.

Hi Dale,

Do you mean to have the jaws of the channel lock around the top and the bottom of the gutter and then pry upwards?

Yes, that is what I mean. Use the teeth as the lever with out a crushing effect on the channel. It takes a very light touch when doing this. It will then pop off.

Once you have the channel off you will be able to see that the bottom of the channel has an inverted "V" on it to hold this piece in place.

When you go to put them back on, just need light tap on the V grove to give it its locking power.

Thanks Dale for the rain gutter removal tip. Using the channel locks and a bit of tape and a screw driver, the gutter came right off.

Mowog-
I would try to put as little paint on the lip that the moulding/trim goes onto. If you over paint it you will never get the trim back on or at least with out bending it![:(]

Good point Micheal. Right now the gutter has been stripped of all paint. Tomorrow I'll be spraying on the primer and will keep the amount put on the gutter light (as well as the paint to come).
