Hydraulic clutch pipe query

Postby samco » 07 Jan 2008 19:44

I am now at the point with my resto where I need to refit the flexible clutch pipe between the master and slave cylinder and was wondering if it worth refitting the old one. I have two old ones i could fit but most of the exterior plastic on all of the cars i have is quite brittle and wondered were they prone to failure when they are over 25 years old. I know it would be easy to fit a goodridge hose but as usual the cost is spiralling out of control and I would like to save money where possible, but not at the expence of reliability.

If it doesn't fit you obviously need a bigger hammer.

After having had lot's of trouble with the clutch using the original plastic hoses I ditched them for braided hoses.

Yes I am lucky in that I have a specialist brake manifacturer and supplier in the neighbouring village

Hiya,

Mine is still on the original pipe and slave cylinder, carried over from the 7 to V8 conversion. Whilst yours is in bits I'd take the opportunity of changing it. The V8 engine bay gets mighty hot and the exhaust manifold isn't far away from it. Standard brake fluid is more flammable than petrol apparently.

I've never had to touch the clutch slave cylinder but have rebuilt the master cylinder 3 times. The rubber bits have perished every 6 - 7 years approx.

Cheers,

Adam

If you have a tuned V8 generating a lot of heat, the plastic pipe can go soft near exhaust. If you have a heavy duty clutch, this requires more pressure to operate and the pipe could burst.
You could leave it untill it happens, but.....

Hi,
Dont want to scare anyone [:0] BUT brake fluid will burn especially on a red hot exhaust pipe [xx(] Saw this happen to a VW Sharan a few years ago which had a clutch pipe leak onto a exhaust manifold.
Cheers John.

Hello,
I made mine from brake line purchased at aotuzone. It is very easy to bend and work with. You just may need to pur different fittings on the ends. I did mine over two years ago, and have had no problems at all with it...err the line that is..lol
