Lead Loading

Postby Reg » 13 Apr 2015 13:14

I have just finished Lead Loading all 12 seams between all the panels having taken great care to scrape out, de-rust and grind off to shiny metal. I am very pleased with the result even if I did use small amount of filler to finish and get the contours I wanted. I think this is a long term solution to potential Rust areas. Has anyone else gone down this route?

Having used lead to fill seams in the past I found it important to treat the area underneath carefully as a lot more paint had been burned off than I realised(of course you are probably aware of this already)and the underside of the seams was left largely unprotected.Since then I use a flexible sealant, bolt it together tight and trust to luck.Steve..

Yes, some pics would be really interesting.

Many years ago I went on a TR Register event which devoted half a day to lead loading. Half of my effort ended up on the floor but in the hands of an expert it was very impressive.

The seams on the front and rear wings of my DHC were all filled flush when given a bare metal re spray by Grinnal. I was told that the seams would be filled with weld. They are still holding up 25 years later. IIRC S&S told me they similarly welded the joins together but ground in a thin line to demonstrate that there was a seam there.
