I'm not an expert on this subject but isn't true that this site uses old technology.?
I think until it is upgraded it will always be an easy target

Mind you, I'm just a cantankerous ol' cuss, but why couldn't a sort of new membership committee be formed to winnow the wheat from the chaff?

Potential candidates could contact the on duty member for some minor screening to qualify themselves as genuine interested members while the spammers would be flushed.

Perhaps the new candidates would like to offer up a small initiation like a pie, or a pizza, or some fried chicken? Abner says he likes ice cream. Yes, I know I'm being facetious, but a gate keeper can wield great power.

on the two sites i run the problem with that is when someone registers, there is no way you know if it is a spammer

until they post and by that time it is too late.with the exception of i.p identification

I had someone who's forum name was like 456321 I thought spammer

turns out he is a club member and a good poster and the forum name was his d.0.b and house number.

then there was some one called something like simon0f yip spammer

New upgraded or modern site will have things installed to help.

We had a moderate spam attack last night so had no choice but demand to lock the door temporarily once again. Hate to do this but with the holiday season fast approaching I just don't have the time for a massive attack that would have surely happened if we turned our back for a day or two. We might make a couple more band-aid changes in the next couple of days to try out before reopening the site to new membership , otherwise everything else for all current members should not change.

Btw Stevie , what are the two sites you moderate , I'd just like to take a quick look at the formats of the site.

Thanks gang!

Ron.

As soon as you shut the doors the postings go down dramatically. It's like a ghost town on here.

I'd noticed that as well, John, but I really don't understand how shutting the spammers out [ie - closing the site [albeit temporarily] to new members]actually affects the number of daily posts made by existing members?

no, i'm sorry but i disagree - it took me over a year to get on the forum and feel something need to be done to keep it open .... until it does become open then my contributions will be made only in the TRDC magazine and facebook.

Best of luck getting things sorted.

Christopher - I'm just saying that most contributions come from the 'old hands' and not new ones.
That isn't to say the new ones should be excluded - just that they cannot be blamed for what appears to be a 'slow day'.

Well, this 'Old Hand' is still here, whether I sound off or not. All special interest forums go through less active periods. With this being a sort of hibernation period, we bears are somewhat subdued.

In my case, I am at a stand still for new technical articles and am dealing with minor maintenance issues not worthy of note. Mostly, I am tracking down odds & ends on ebay and watching the year end sales at the usual vendors.

As to the vile spammers ever lurking, I still contend we could use a kind of gate keeper committee to let in the actual new members while screening out the spam-boys.

Hi,

Sorry gents have to agree with my learned friend Andrew, most posts on here are by long term members. It just gets quite from time to time, so its in your hands ladies and gents get posting !

Not to say that new blood is not more than welcome ( and the future ) after all this is not some elite old boys club ! I am sure the doors will be open again soon and hopefully not for spammers, fully understand why Ron / Jay done what they done.

Cheers John
