I bought my '71 for $350 back in later '70's. Looked like new inside, looked like some took a shotgun to it on the outside. Pan wasn't rusted. Used it for work for a couple of years. I got per diem rates of a new Chevy Malibu so made some extra money. Traded it for a friend's F150 Ford truck to move out to the coast. The car was good in snow, going up a steep hill, there were cars all over the place that plowed in to the side snow banks trying to get up. I just motored on up with no problem. You got used to the noisy air cooled engine on the highway (it would top out at 84 mph). Only money I spent on it was a clutch and a distributor both cheap and both I put in myself. Other than that it was gas and oil only. The gas heater did use a lot of gas though which you had to use when it was -20 and you had to turn it off before the fan so you didn't burn out the heat plug, by which time it was cold inside again but when going, it would keep you warm when it was as cold as it could get this side of the arctic circle. You could drive it like you were racing it, as it was indestrucable.
My brother used to rebuild VW engines and he did one that would beat any muscle car on the streets. There was all kinds of racing parts for the as the engines were raced in Formula V.
Cop waved me over once on the way home from work at a traffic check and you could tell from the look on his face he knew from the condition of the outside he had one. Passed all the safety/light checks and you should have seen the look on his face as he waved me on. It was priceless.
