Slow Indicators

OK, seems a common problem. Switch on indicators and they are slow when revs are high and even slower when at idle (almost to a stop!) Sound familiar?

I researched the modern 3 pin RFL3 approach, earthing the third unused pin. That looks OK. Any suggestions on type of relay beyond the RFL3 type already mentioned?

I've got the 2 pin one on my car and it works great. It plugs directly onto the original connector, so no extra wires needed. However the wires in the connector need to be swapped around before you plug it in, otherwise it will blow the relay. [:)]

I've had the same problem on both my 7 DHC and my Doly Sprint.

The 7 was fixed by properly earthing both rear light units - connecting the lucar spade conector on the unit casting to one of the bolts that hold it to the body.

The Sprint has about 500 ohms between the battery and the flasher unit acording to my AVO, most of it in the ignition switch, I think. The only way to fix that was to use a three pin flasher unit, as you've identified. It was also one of ebay, but I haven't any records of what it is, and I've had me tea (tacos), so I don't much fancy doing handstands on the drivers seat to look - sorry.

I used the RFL3 from Vehicle Wiring Products, not had a problem with the flashers since fitting about 3 years ago. They keep a constant flash rate even when idling.

They also keep a constant flash rate when a towing board is connected. At least, mine does.

Thank you for all the feedback. I'm going to go down the RFL3 route. Out of interest the cheapest I could find (all in with VAT+p&p included) was on good old ebay:

WHOA! Before we start pouring money down the drain, why don't we try the simple and free repair route? Please, have some milk and cookies then start cleaning the ground connections on all the lights, and switches, and connectors. Clean the battery posts and cables. Clean the alternator connectors and all the body grounding points like the one next to the battery. There is a small flimsy ground wire attached to a bellhousing bolt that is easy to break.

With money so tight and getting tighter, I hate to see it spent where it doesn't need to be.

I assure you that I've tried that already and yes, it's improved a bit but nowhere near enough to pass an MOT at the moment. I like the idea of extra earths - especially at the rear.

I'm still going ahead and fitting an RFL3 unit. I've had this problem in the past and it's super annoying, so hopefully a bit of extra earthing and the new item in tandem will see me right :)

It could be that the turn indicator is just getting tired. My original one works fine but if you're going to replace it may as well go with an electronic one (unless you're going to entering a judged concourse d'elegance show). They're not that expensive.

My Wedge is Mot'd at the garage just down the road from where Robsport were originally.

The engine is kept running for the various light tests so the indicators keep up to pace. All the connections in the circuits have to be clean if you're using the original flasher unit (like me)

Nobody has mentioned cleaning one of the most important parts: the contacts inside the flasher unit, these wear away due to sparking. I´m referring to the Lucas 8FL unit fitted to my Norton that i vaguely remember is the same or very similar to the TR7 one. The cover is easily removed by levering 2 of the 4 prongs with a miniature flat blade screwdriver. I slip a superfine sandpaper between the contacts. In my case i had a slow/hesitant blinking, I managed to speed up the flashing interval by (with the cover removed and the indicators flashing) VERY gently pressing on various areas of the thin plate that holds the bi metal strip, until a variation in speed is noted. But beware, this is a delicate operation, you could easily burn out the strip if you press too hard/long, or function the flasher with no load, i learned this the hard way!

Did the RFL3 modification and I'm glad to report that my Indicators have now been transformed.
Full speed at idle and throughout the rev range - highly recommended mod!
