How do you reconnect the camshaft timing gear?

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

How do you reconnect the camshaft timing gear?

Postby Andypotter » 25 Apr 2014 07:41

I have had my cylinder head rebuilt and am now refitting, but can't get the timing chain gear to fix back onto the end of the camshaft. I have lined up the timing marks, but it just will not sit back into place, is there a special trick?

Is there enough slack in the timing chain to allow the wheel to fit onto the camshaft. If not, you will have to retract the tensioner slipper.

Did you have the camshaft held in place by the chain guide/camshaft stay, per the service manual.

If not, the timing chain tensioner moved out and causing the timing chain gear to not align. if that's the case now you have to remove the timing chain cover to fix the problem.

Just back off the nut holding the sprocket to the stay. Just a little should be enough to let it wiggle and line up.

I've had this problem also. Usually what happens is the sprocket is too low and the hole will not line up with the camshaft as it sits on the bearings. Lift the camshaft from the rear to angle it down and attempt to fit it that way. Once you mate it to the sprocket you can let it back down on the bearings and install the bearing caps.

Many thanks all for the help and advice. It seems the support bracket was a little loose and had moved. This prevented me from lining up the sprocket. All this was found when I dropped nut inside the timing cover and had to pull the front end off... 6 hrs later, we were all back together. Now it is being stubborn on starting... I'm chasing an illusive spark....
